The convoy system was a way to prevent German U-boats from sinking food and supply ships.
Before the convoy system, supply ships were sent one by one and this is why Germany sank over 1000 of the ships going to England from different allied countries. After the convoy system was introduced, the supply ships were guarded by armed destroyers that kept constant watch over any hostile ships or U-boats trying to cause damage to the supply ships. The ships would travel in small groups or convoys. At the start of the war, Canada’s navy was very small,it had only 2 warships. By the end of the war, the Navy had grown significantly and Canada had 112 warships
