A simple washing out of the eyes is not sufficient. The complete bathing of the body once each day is of the utmost importance. Not more than a quart of water is necessary, preferably rainwater.”

•Hair: “The head should be washed occasionally with soap and water. When the hair is inclined to be harsh and dry, a moderate application of bear’s grease or other dressing should be used.”

•Skin: “Beware of exterior applications of cosmetics. Instead, once every two or three months, take a teaspoonful of powdered charcoal mixed with sweetened water or milk. This will prove efficacious in making the complexion clear and transparent.”

•Kissing: “Upon the meeting of intimate friends, among ladies, at the private house, the kiss as a mode of salutation is yet common; but this is a custom which ought to be abolished for physiological and other reasons.”

Social Etiquette and Manners

•Bowing: “A gentleman should not bow from a window to a lady on the street, though he may bow slightly from the street upon being recognized by a lady in a window. Such recognition should, however, generally be avoided, as gossip is likely to attach undue importance to it when seen by others.”

•Dignity: “To greet someone by saying “Hello, old fellow” indicates ill-breeding. If you are approached in this vulgar manner, it is better to give a civil reply and address the person respectfully, in which case he is quite likely to be ashamed of his own conduct.”

•Small talk: “No topic of absorbing interest may be admitted to polite conversation. Should you observe anyone cheating, quietly and very politely call it to his attention, and be careful that you do not get excited. People who experience ill-feeling at the game should avoid playing.”

•Marriage: “Anyone with bright red hair and a florid complexion should marry someone with jet-black hair. They may be the last.”

•Train travel: “People with weak eyes should avoid reading on trains, and those with weak lungs should avoid talking.”

•Street etiquette: “When crossing the pavement, a lady should raise her dress with the right hand, a little about the ankle. To raise the dress with both hands is vulgar and can only be excused when mud is very deep.”

the role of women:

women were not educated like men they had to marry wealthy and have kids they knitted in there own time and there job was to help with the family business.

marriage:

women had to try find a wealthy man to marry before the age of 24.
Jane Austen never married but got a proposal from Harris Bigg-Wither but did not marry him.

Jane Austen
- Jane Austen was born in the year 1775 16th of December. She was born in England in Stevenson. However, she was not the only child in her family. She had 8 siblings, including herself. She had 6 brothers and 1 sister, Cassandra, who was one of her closest friends. When Jane was youth, she caught typhus which she nearly died of.
Jane was in love with writing when she was only as young as 12. Jane's parents were community members. Her father served as the Oxford-educated rector for a nearby Anglican parish. The family was close and the children grew up in an environment that stressed learning and creative thinking.
Jane spent much of her early adulthood helping run the family home, playing piano, attending church, and interacted with her neighbours. Jane with her many talents even became and accomplished dancer. In 1801, Jane moved to Bath with her father, mother and Cassandra. Then after 4 years, her father died after a short illness. In 1816, at the age of 41, Jane started to become ill with what some say might have been Addison's disease and unfortunatley died.

Victorian era
- The victorian era included the years 1837 until 1901. England went through big transformations during the Victorian Era efficiently. It was filled with the development of the new inventions. In 1876 the telephone was invented as well as the camera, toilet, sewing machine, vacuum, train and stamp. During the Victorian Era, there were extremely strict codes of morals and conduct just like the children were not allowed to be loud and couldn't spend much time with their own parents. The ladies did not wear a dress that showed their ankles. Men did not call a single women by her first name unless they were engaged.

Polite Society
- Polite Society was preferred to as 'upper class', people who were mannerly and polite. Jane Austen's style of writing was exceptitonally posh and 'upper class'.

The role of a woman
- In the Victorian era women were seen, by the middle classes at least, as belonging to the domestic sphere, and this stereotype required them to provide their husbands with a clean home, food on the table and to raise their children. Women’s rights were extremely limited in this era, losing ownership of their wages, all of their physical property, excluding land property, and all other cash they generated once married. When a Victorian man and woman married, the rights of the woman were legally given over to her spouse.

Marriage
- In 1802 Jane's partner had got down on one knee and proposed in marriage. Although Jane loved her man she did not accept the hand in marriage. In the end both Jane and her sister did not engage in marriage.

Jane books
-1811 - Sense & Sensibility
-1813 - Pride and Prejudice
-1814- Mansfield Park
-1815- Emma
-1817 - Persuasion
-1817 - Northanger Abbey
-1817 - Sanditon

Unfortunately her final book 'Sanditon' was unfinished at the time of her death.

Jane Austen was an English novelist whose books, set among the English middle and upper classes, are notable for their wit, social observation and insights into the lives of early 19th century women.

About Jane Austen

Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in the village of Steventon in Hampshire. She was one of eight children of a clergyman and grew up in a close-knit family. She began to write as a teenager. In 1801 the family moved to Bath. After the death of Jane's father in 1805 Jane, her sister Cassandra and their mother moved several times eventually settling in Chawton, near Steventon.

Jane Austen's books

Jane's brother Henry helped her negotiate with a publisher and her first novel, 'Sense and Sensibility', appeared in 1811. Her next novel 'Pride and Prejudice', which she described as her "own darling child" received highly favourable reviews. 'Mansfield Park' was published in 1814, then 'Emma' in 1816. 'Emma' was dedicated to the prince regent, an admirer of her work. All of Jane Austen's novels were published anonymously.

Jane Austens marriage

On 2 December 1802, when Jane and her sister were visiting Manydown House in Hampshire, Harris Bigg-Wither, the 21-year old younger brother of Jane’s friends Alethea and Catherine, proposed marriage to her—and was accepted. Jane was 6 years older than Harris, and a good deal cleverer, but they had known each other a long time, and he must have had some encouragement from her in the months or years before popping the question, or he wouldn’t have dared ask. And she said yes, after all: There might have been plenty of mutual regard, even love.

But after what must have been an agonizing night of second thoughts, Jane left Manydown abruptly and in confusion, having broken off her very short engagement.

The role of the women

It would very much depend on their social status. Women of the upper and upper middle classes (Jane Austen herself was at the lower edge of the upper class) would generally expect to stay at home until they married, and after married would be busy raising a family and running a household. They would normally have servants to do most of the housework, so their role would be mainly supervisory. They would be expected to manage the family budget. They might have a large family (Jane Austen was one of nine children for instance), and would be expected to give the children their first lessons, teaching them to read etc. Boys would eventually have a tutor or go away to boarding school, and girls might have a governess or go away to school, or just continue to be educated at home by their mothers.

Death and illness

In 1816, Jane began to suffer from ill-health, probably due to Addison's disease. She travelled to Winchester to receive treatment, and died there on 18 July 1817. Two more novels, 'Persuasion' and 'Northanger Abbey' were published posthumously and a final novel was left incomplete.

Jane Austin was an english writer known mainly for her six major novels; Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Persuasion, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park. Her novels are known for the way they critique and comment on the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century and how they interpret the way society was back then.
Little Facts:
Born: December 16, 1775, Steventon
Died: July 18, 1817, Winchester
Buried: July 24, 1817, Winchester Cathedral, Winchester
Polite Society:
may refer to: The upper class Polite society, the etiquette and manners of the upper class. Janes writing style was quite posh or 'upper class'.
The Role Of A Woman;
Back then it was a woman's duty to get married (at a young age usually 16-24) to a wealthy man and have lots of children for him as it was a mans role to 'continue the bloodline'
Books;
Sense and sensibility - 1811
Pride and Prejudice-1813
Mansfield Park - 1814
Emma-1815
Persuasion-1817
Northanger Abbey- 1817
Sanditon- 1817 (Unfinished as she died when writing it)

Victorian Era;
In the victorian era families were quite large, on average families had 5-6 kids. Family life was quite different to the way it is now, every family member had a 'role' and children were taught to know their place and to "be seen and not heard". They called their dads "Sir". And instead of the mum calling the dad by their first name in social situations they would usually call their husband "Mr.____". The father would be in charge of the house.
Marriage;
Back in this era it was a must to be married by the time you were 24(If you were a woman) as you didnt want to become a spinster.
In Victorian times you didn't marry for love, you would marry for money; to quote Pride and Prejudice - “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife” .
Jane Austen never married she was a spinster, however she came close to getting married after accepting a proposal but then rejecting it the next day after thinking it through.
