Students engaged in conversation about how we could figure out what food molecules a graham cracker contains and what food molecules are found in the mouth after mixing with amylase. They determined that we needed to mix food with saliva containing amylase which lead in nicely to the investigation included in the OpenSciEd unit. The students were given the investigation framework and data table which was a way for us to scaffold investigation skills with the students. They were given different foods to choose from along with amylase solutions, iodine, and Benedict's to investigate with. The students had some choice.

Once the students had compiled all their data they made claims in their small groups and used evidence to prove their claim. Then we split the class into two scientist circles for them to share what they did and discuss their data, claims, and evidence in order to reach a consensus.

I believe the structure of this investigation matched our students' skills which most of them don't have strong science method skills. They engaged in rich collaboration and problem-solving conversations during the investigation. In the scientists circles they are becoming more competent in their abilities to state a claim and use specific science evidence to argue their point. This is a skill we have been practicing and was really the first big opportunity they have had to show what they have learned.
