Pros
1. Great for organizing research
2. Could be used to create a type of Sketch-note page
3. The set up of your board is on the advanced side (9+). Younger kids could benefit from a teacher starting their board and sharing it with them.
4. ability to interact collaboratively on the board
5. Different formats available (timeline, map, board, etc). I am using "stream".
6. You can comment on each posting and rate it (the type of rating is chosen in board setup)
7. There are settings to show the author of each new item to help teachers see who contributed to each item
8. Everything is automatically saved so you don't have to worry about losing your hard work
9. You can customize your background and colour of each posting

Cons
1. Limited with the basic version ( 3 Padlets, 10mb of storage)--> Pro $8/ month for unlimited Padlets and 250 MB of storage
2. To edit a posting you have to click "edit". Would be better if you could just click and start typing
3. You can only include one picture on each posting (problematic in a case like my rubric posting)
4. There is a large chance of the board becoming overwhelming
5. could be too complicated for younger children. More suited for grade 4+.

Evaluation of Padlet from a multimedia prospective

Padlet allows students to use or see various forms of representation in one board to display a concept of their choice. The use of multiple forms of representation is the basis for the Multimedia principle (Mayer, 2014). Sorden lists 5 forms of representation that are successful learning tools, each of which is available to add on your board.

Words and pictures

Acoustic representations (sounds) and iconic representations (images) in sensory memory

Sounds and images in working memory

Verbal and pictorial models in working memory

Prior knowledge of schemas in long term memory

The students can see a concept presented in both auditory(voice recordings, video) and visual( pictures, links, text, videos) ways. By representing a concept in both configurations, Paivio’s Dual Coding Theory, as highlighted by Sorden will be utilized. This allows students to better absorb the concept because they will process information faster through their working memory and into their long term memory because it will be processed in two channels, rather than one.

Depending on who is creating and who is looking at the board, different multimedia principles are most prevalent.

It is important when creating your lessons, to begin with, setting goals (learning outcomes) before you begin the process. You must lesson plan before you create your content in order to have a successful lesson (Alexander, 2017).

~If a teacher is using this to give resources to students then these are the multimedia principles most prevalent and why.~

A teacher can set up a combination of resources to display a topic. Depending on the learning outcomes, teachers can pick and choose which layout, form of posting, and amount of postings that best fit their goals. You should keep the Modality principle in mind and chose mostly video or audio recordings to keep the posting as narration and image majority (Mayer, 2014, p.8). The redundancy principle is important to keep in mind, as well, to avoid overlap of information in each posting (ie. do not teach the same thing over and over on one board)( Mayer, 2014, p. 8). The signalling principle will be very important in this application to guide students to the most important takeaways of the lesson ( Mayer, 2014, pg 8). The boards can become overwhelming with many different resources, so organization is key to the creation of a successful multimedia learning environment. The use of signalling can be a form of the guided discovery Principle as it is the only teacher intervention in this type of lesson (Mayer, 2014, p. 9). The use of signals would act as a teacher's guidance through an asynchronous lesson. The segmenting principle fits perfectly into this application of the app (asynchronous) because it allows students to read, listen, and watch at their own pace (Mayer, 2014, p. 9).

To achieve the pre-training principle, Padlet could be used as a lesson once the topic is introduced so students are familiar with the concept (Mayer, 2014, p.9). This would ensure that students don't feel overwhelmed when independently working through the lesson.

As a teacher, you should carefully choose your content included on your board. Pay special attention to video content so you can include aspects of the personalization principle, the voice principle, the image principle, the animation principle, and the embodiment principle (Mayer, 2014, p.8-9).

The temporal contiguity principle is one that can fall through the cracks, as images will most likely be on separate posting, but could be integrated into a text posting such as this one (Mayer, 2014, p.8). The spatial contiguity principle would be easier to achieve, as placing images and videos next to corresponding words is achievable (Mayer, 2014, p.8)

Overall, this is a simple way to create a multimedia lesson. The only danger is that there is a temptation to provide too many resources, leading to an overwhelmed learner. I think that this is not something that should be the leader of a lesson, but instead, a supplemental tool to reinforce prior taught lessons.

~If a student is creating this as a notes page these are the multimedia principles most relevant and why.~

The split-attention principle shows that words and images physically and temporally integrated have better learning outcomes ( Mayer, 2014, p. 8) therefore, notes that have both integrated together will support this principle. Again as in the previous section, the coherence principle is harder to follow than the spatial contiguity principle (Mayer, 2014, p.8). The signalling principle could be used to help the students' future self look back and notice important information while studying their notes pages (Mayer, 2014, p.8). They should avoid extraneous material to abide by the coherence principle and avoid future confusion when using the resource later on (Mayer, 2014, p.8).

Due to students creating their own resource page, the segmenting principle, the pre-training principle, the guided discovery principle, and the self- explanation principles work to create a self-created learning resource that is individualized to the learner and their learning style (Mayer, 2014, p. 8-9).

The students should mostly include text and images, but if they include videos it would be important to tell them to chose ones that follow the personalization principle, the voice principle, the image principle, the animation principle, and the embodiment principle (Mayer, 2014, p.8).

Overall, this app can be a helpful resource to create visual notes for someone who does not enjoy written notes. Again, I do not think this should be a primary resource but maybe a synthesis of a unit instead.

~If a student(s) is using Padlet to create a research project then these are the multimedia principles most relevant and why.~

The principles in the section above would apply to create a research project as well. As a teacher, you would give specific instructions on what you want the main delivery form to be. With this guidance, students can focus on finding images to support written text or videos that fit the principles outlined above. Each project would look different depending on what instruction you give and how each student puts those instructions into play.

I think this is the most applicable application of this app. The collaboration aspect, the ability to comment, the variety of resources can offer a chance to create a really unique research display. I think of it as a virtual poster board.

Final review

Overall, this app has the potential to create a meaningful multimedia lesson. The creator has to be very strategic if they wish to include all of the multimedia principles, as this application has the potential to become overwhelming and disorganized. With a plan, careful construction, and instructions, Padlet can be an amazing, supplemental, creative learning space.
