In this city, the pace of life will be slow and enjoyable. The leisure time of the people will be characterised by a common cultural activity of the community, where people will become acquainted with their neighbours. These community cultural activities will also be diverse and distinctive, and will become the hallmark of the community. For example, in a Hmong community, the textile community will be dominated by Hmong embroidery. Meanwhile, in communities where the Bai people will be living, the textile community culture will be based on Bai tie-dye. There will be more links and exchanges between communities.

The reason for my choice

The reason for my choice is that I travelled from Eastern China to Southwest China in 2014 and spent 7 years studying and living in Chongqing, the central city of Southwest China, which I have made my second home during these 7 years, as it was here that I first came into clear contact with textile intangible cultural heritage. The charm of these traditional textiles fascinated me so much that I set out to learn about the Hmong textile intangible cultural heritage in the Southwest China and spent 3 months living in a Hmong village. During these 3 months, I became friends with the people in the Hmong village, who were simple, kind and hospitable. Apart from brocade weaving and embroidery, there were also Hmong mountain songs and music, and the scenes of weaving and singing together are my most unforgettable memories.

The problem in the Hmong textile intangible cultural heritage

In Southwest China, the Hmong textile intangible cultural heritage is still preserved in the daily life of the local people, but there are two obvious problems.

On the one hand, retired women wear hand-woven, dyed and embroidered garments on the daily life. However, for the young in the region, these garments are only worn when the young attend group events (e.g. weddings, funerals, etc.).

On the other hand, due to the rapid spread of short video platforms, practitioners are more likely to learn textile skills through short videos than from local retired, creating a problem of cultural homogenization, where the distinctiveness of different styles of textile skills from different communities in the Southwest China is diminishing and cultural uniqueness and iconicity is diminishing.
