Space Operations

As we progress through history, humans have relied more and more on technology. This progression and reliance on technological systems has grown at an exponential rate over the past 20 years. Let’s look at the year 2007, when the very first iPhone was introduced. The creation and use of smart phones has completely changed the way that society operates, and this was only 16 years ago! As a space operator, we are completely dependent on the use of modern technology. Personnel in my career field must be able to connect to, and manipulate objects that are hundreds of miles away from the Earth’s surface, which means that they must be digitally fluent the second they sit down for work. For this reason, I chose the following three methods: distance learning, wikis, and chat rooms. These three learning methods are useful not only in the classroom, but when our operators are performing operations on the floor, they will continue to use these methods to accomplish the mission.

Distance Learning

Distance learning is comprised of training sessions delivered to students outside of the classroom through methods such as webcasts, virtual classrooms, images, and videos. Since the type of learning is conducted through geographically separated parties, communication through various methods may be used, such as online chat, e-mail, and online discussion boards. Most of these methods listed will be used as individualized, computer-based training that is available to any person with access to a computer. Teleconferencing is another method that can be used that allows for synchronized audio/video in real time, giving employees the chance to interact with the trainers, should they need to.

Pros:

- Companies can save on travel costs

- Allows for a large number of employees that are geographically separated to be trained at the same time

Cons:

- Lack of interaction between employees and trainers

- Technology failures

- Unprepared trainers during live sessions

Experience:

Distance learning has been an integral part of my career not only as a space operator, but also as a mid-tier NCO. Professional military education programs that occur all across the United States require a distance learning program of some sort to save on the thousands of dollars it would cost to continuously fly military members in from across the country. I see it as an effective way to broadcast non-technical training so students that are unable to attend training in person.

Wikis fall under the social media category and are websites that allow multiple people to create, edit, and update data on one webpage to share knowledge and content. These can be seen as “living” online webpages which is effective in getting new information out quickly.

Pros:

- Facilitates collaboration

- Fosters a wide range of data

Cons:

- Potentially could have misinformation uploaded

- Information could be deleted maliciously

Experience:

My experience with wikis in my career field have been limited, but rewarding. These pages are always packed with pertinent information provided by peers with similar experience levels. To me, this is what makes wikis so valuable! The information comes directly from the source, and is often straight to the point information.

Chat rooms are another form of social media that consist of online messaging boards and rooms where students can communicate in real time. These rooms and boards can be moderated by the instructor or other designated personnel to prevent misconduct, inappropriate behavior, and keep conversations focused on the intended topic during sessions.

Pros:

- Collaboration and information sharing from multiple perspectives

- A method to “speak” to a group of people at one time

Cons:

- Technology outages/bad connections

- Learning is dependent entirely on the quality of the instructor/moderator

Experience:

I had the opportunity to experience chat rooms early on in my career during training. This online tool allows for efficient communication across large rooms, and is a good way to stay coordinated with a group of people without leaving your workspace.

Ethical Dilemma

Wikis are an excellent way to disseminate information quickly to all users that seek the content on that particular page. A huge ethical problem with wikis pages is that due to the large amount of collective information on all wiki pages, moderation of the information can be slowed, allowing for misinformation of malicious content to purposed be added to the page. In this case, the ease of access to add or remove information could be a detractor to using this method to broadcast information. A possible solution could be to create wiki pages specifically for a particular section or topic, then heavily moderate that page. The trade-off would be personnel resources and man-hours spent to police the page on a daily basis.

https://wikieducator.org/Wikieducator_tutorial/What_is_a_wiki/Advantages_and_disadvantages

https://www.heartland.edu/documents/idc/Wikis.pdf

The benefit of using technology in the digital age is that our society revolves around it. There are consistently new resources being created to enhance our ways of communication and connections between people. A trusted resource for distance learning is Zoom, a video communications platform designed for collaboration between individuals. Zoom was largely used during COVID-19 as a way to continue school and business operations from a distance. This app is easily installed on a home computer or smart phone, allowing for almost all individuals with access to the internet to be able to use it. Many websites allow for users to design a wiki page for little to no cost or free, but the easiest way is to use Microsoft! Microsoft is a well-known, credible company that allows for wikis to be created and shared through SharePoint. Since wikis are basically “living” webpages, a user could even make it easier by replicating a wiki using a sharable Word document. No matter how the wiki is created, the most important part is getting the information out there for users to create, update, and share amongst their peers. Chat rooms are also easily managed through Microsoft using Teams chat.

The benefit of some programs such as Zoom as it also has a chat function built in as well as audio/visual communications. Mobile phones have a large variety of chat programs as well, although you lose the ability to moderate and police individuals with some smart phone apps.

I personally see a large value and benefit with all three of the listed training methods above. Using these tools allows students to engage around the clock with the learning material, while at work or in the comfort of their own homes. This gives students additional time to digest the material, and also address topics and questions that may come up outside of class hours. Students that are introverted may also thrive in chat rooms created for the students outside of the duty day.

Implementation

Implementation of these resources would be easy, as we already use most of them at designated times in my work center. I would like to see an increased use of distance learning to take advantage of learning in a relaxed environment, where students can continuously review the material. This would allow for things such as homework assignments. Unfortunately, wiki pages can not be accessed at home for students in my career field, but the use of chats can be created at the beginning of class to collaborate on projects. Currently, students in my work center are using Discord, an easy to use communications program the works on both mobile phones and computers to communicate and schedule events.
