At my school in third grade we get chicks and butterflies to watch grow as a part of our life cycle units. I think this is a great time to use a hands on approach and let the students touch the chicken eggs, feed the chicks, watch their caterpillars turn into a chrysalis etc. I can incorporate visuals (I used so many this year) and graphic organizers to show the life cycle processes. Students can even collaborate and work with each other to make predictions and investigate.

Sorry, my name is not on the list... Throughout the spring my students learn about plants and insects. We grow plants and raise different types of insects in our classroom, which gives students hands-on opportunities to learn. We also read many books, watch videos, and create visuals to support learning. Students work in groups to make observations and predictions as our plants and insects go through their life cycle.

One science lesson that I incorporated in first grade that I found to be successful was when we were learning about light and shadows. First, we discussed what we already knew about light (light sources, why it is important, etc.). I provided vocab cards that included pictures. Then I paired students up to just explore light using flashlights. After they explored, I brought them together as a whole group and we discussed what they discovered. Then we talked about what a shadow is. I provided visual examples for the students. Then I provided students with a bag of different objects to explore the shadows they create with their partner. Students had to first guess what they thought the shadow would be then they would test it. After, they discussed with their partner what they noticed. After they explored each object, we came together as a whole class and shared. My students loved this hands-on activity.

When I was a Kindergarten teacher, I taught my students about the seasons and during fall we explored outside looking for different types and colors of leaves. After each student found a leaf of their own, we brought them inside and examined the leaves. My students measured the leaves, drew a picture of their leaf, "rubbed" the leaf with a crayon to show the leaves texture, and so on. Not only was this interactive and students collaborated with each other, but it was also an opportunity for students to really learn about their natural environment.

Science lesson-Owl Pellets

This science lesson is always fun and engaging for all my students. Many of them are disgusted by the thought of dissecting an Owl Pellet but once on the learning and engaging activities are completed prior to this experiment, students quickly become engaged and eager to dissect their owl pellet. Having a high number of EL students in my classroom this past year made the planning process of these science lessons pretty challenging for me because there were many vocabulary terms and concepts that I had to pre-teach to all students but adding in a visual piece for my EL students and tapping into any background knowledge these students had to relate it to what was being learned and taught. Overall, this experiment was a success and all students had a blast!

One lesson I was able to implement was when I had a student go to India, I had her share her experience with the class. She was so excited and the students enjoyed learning about it!

We had a lesson on the Statue of Liberty, and after discussing why it is green, I had the students make malachite on pennies to show them. The students loved it. -Matt T

A science lesson I did that can foster engagement for ELLs is a rubber-band banjo. Each rubber-band was different in color, length, and size and the students had to figure out which bands were higher pitch and which were lower pitch. Then they learned about how vibrations and the thickness/length of the bands were the causes for the changes in pitch. They had a lot of fun with their banjos and learning about how sound works!

I gave a lesson on electric circuits and then we made potato batteries with different types of circuits. Kids had a blast.

A science lesson I have implemented with my students is planting a Seeded and having different lighting conditions to determine what will be successful one we planned under lamp light, the next one would be in a closet, and the third one would be by windowsill. We may predictions as a class as to what will happen to each one students draw what they see daily. We record the information on a chart and we continue this process for several weeks to see what changes.

Every year I do Holidays Around the World unit with my first graders! Each day, we "travel" to a new country an learn all about how different people celebrate during the holiday season. I incorporate new vocabulary and even have my student learn words in the various languages. They absolutely love this unit! I have not officially had any ELL students in my classroom but I feel that this would be really beneficial for them, it would also allow them to bring in experiences from their own families!

This year I did a group activity for my third grade students focusing on why the Americans were upset with the British tax laws, such as the stamp act. Each student got a role, one was King George, one was parliament, and one was the tax collector. The rest of the group members got goldfish which represented taxes. The Parliament pulls a card and announces the item on the card and the amount taxed (they were silly like give 10 goldfish if you have a brother). The Tax Collector from each group, uses the spoon to collect that many Goldfish from the student taxed and places the Goldfish in the Ziploc bag. The Parliament continues to call the items until all cards are used. Each Tax Collector must share five of their Goldfish with the Parliament and ten Goldfish with the King. This activity was engaging and fun and made the point of the unfairness they felt being taxed and how the colonists felt becoming the central issue with the revolution “Taxation without Representation”. I also liked this activity because for EL students, we could assign them a role where they felt comfortable to participate in the activity.

One Science and Social Studies lesson I do with my first graders each year around Thankgiving is do a lot of reading and research about pilgrims. We then do a science experiment and make our own butter in a mason jar using heavy whipping cream. We take turns shaking the mason jar and discuss all of the different properties the heavy whipping cream goes through until it turns into butter. Then they get to try it with corn bread, they love it!

Next year, I will be doing a lot of group work, jigsaws, and gallery walks with my students. I will also spend a good amount of time on vocabulary instruction. I will begin the year by surveying my students. I will pair ELs with students who speak their language when possible.

Since I am not currently a teacher a thought back to my own education experience and a lesson that sticks out to me is a lesson I had in elementary school about The Plant Life Cycle. We were able to watch different video clips and see the plant it's different stages. We then were each about to plan a seed in the class and we would watch it grow over the semester and care for it. After the lesson was over, we were able to bring our plant home. It was exciting and interactive, and we were able to work together. I think having activities like these help the learners interact and share their excitement. It stood out because this lesson had worksheets and flash cards, but they were not as fun and interactive.

For social studies in December, I do something called Christmas Around the World with my 2nd graders. We "travel" to different countries and learn about the country's customs, traditions, foods, language, etc. The students create a suitcase to travel with along with a map, passport, and plane tickets. When in a country, we locate it on the map and then use stories, slideshows, and videos to learn. After, we create a craft that represents an important part of how each country celebrates during Christmas time and they keep these crafts in their suitcases.

I did not run the lesson myself, but we had a science lesson talking about plant parts. This lesson became a hands activity for our students. We had a couple of different plants to show different examples of what each plant part could look like. After the lesson, the students were able to choose which plant that we showed them they would like to plant. We also used the strategy of putting them in plastic cups to watch the roots grow. Our room is a special education classroom, so giving them that hands on experience was nice to see.

This year, one of my students parents donated a Butterfly pavillion to my classroom. I was able to use the life cycle process to teach the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, and it was fun watching my one EL student getting involved and to use his knowledge of similar processes from other animals, and merge it into the English language of the life cycle process.
