The Tajikistani Civil War was between Tajikistan's Moscow-backed Government and rebel groups in opposition. The rebel groups were led by a combination of Islamists and liberal democratic reformers, who eventually went as the United Tajik Opposition (UTO). A peace accord was signed in 1997 between the Government and the rebel UTO.
