Netiquette #1: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life!

Behavioral standards should not be different just because you feel anonymous. There are still people on the other end of the screen, and they should be treated as humans, not robots. Ethics still belong in cyberspace, even though you may not know who you are talking to. In more extreme cases, breaking the law in cyberspace is illegal and can have consequences. For example, threatening or harassing a person is still illegal online, and such person doing illegal activity could be easily traced by law enforcement.

I found this was an important topic to cover because I personally see numerous harmful words being said anonymously that could be extremely hurtful to another child. It is important to teach children not to use words that they would not want to be called. Since we do not see an actual face, just a screen, it can be simple to say something you do not mean and not feel bad about it. As for illegal activity, children need to understand the consequences of such activity can lead to police involvement.

Netiquette #2: Know where you are in cyberspace!

It is important to research what is and is not appropriate on certain websites. For example, drama is appropriate in message forums and social media, but it is not suitable for news articles or educational programs (Ross, 1999-2011). It is also important to research what websites are suitable for your students' needs or appropriate for your students' age. One can obtain this information by looking at other users of the website and what they say online. If the content is too rigorous or inappropriate, it is essential the child seeks an adult or blocks the web address.

This netiquette rule is critical for students to know because there are many websites in cyberspace, and not all websites will adhere to their needs. I also think parents and educators should be aware of this rule and use it to their advantage to potentially block websites they do not want their children or students to use. Students should be encouraged to share what they are seeking on the internet with their parents and teachers to ensure they are acting appropriately and safely on the internet.

Although the public cannot see people’s faces, most of the time, on the internet, they can see spelling and grammar, which can lead to judgement. In addition, spreading false information does not make the source reliable, so students should know to only share credible information. I chose this netiquette rule because online appearance can be just as important as personal appearance; it is also important to show students how spreading false facts can lead to a game of “telephone” and spiral into a mess they may have created.

It is important to teach children how to look good online because an online attacker may come upon their online work and bully them. Although not everyone has perfect spelling and grammar, helping students learn to proofread will not only help them online, but also in their future writings as well. It is also important the students are checking for credible sources, so they are not spewing misinformation to the world.

Netiquette #4: Be forgiving of other people's mistakes

Forgiveness is a quality I would like all of my students to have. We all make mistakes, and it is important in life to have sympathy for others. Thinking twice before reacting can help students think critically before saying something they may regret, that will be online forever. Teaching students the permanence of cyberspace can help them think twice before reacting online.

I chose forgiving others for their mistakes because at some point in life, everyone makes mistakes. However, it is the way we react that shows our true character. Not only is forgiveness an important quality to have in life, but also a critical characteristic in the permanent, online community. Tying into the first rule, adhere to the same behavior online that you would follow in real life, technology is becoming a part of our students’ cultures. Treating others the way you would like to be treated is a large part in forgiveness.

First, I would start out by describing the definition of netiquette, the correct or acceptable way of communicating on the internet (Sharpened Productions, 2018). Then, to describe the netiquette rule, I would apply the standard of, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” In order for the students to take this seriously, because some will not, I would attempt to contact law enforcement to schedule a class time, so the students will understand the seriousness of not acting appropriately online. They can also learn the dangers of online predators and other types of harassment that they can be exposed to if they are uncareful.

In order to help students look good online, it is critical to teach proper citations. Teaching students the consequences of plagiarism and the importance of crediting sources will help them understand why citations are so critical. Teaching reliable information sources is also another important factor to make the students appear intelligent online. Without using proper sources, the students are not receiving truthful information, and then they will then add on to the dishonesty on the web. In addition, teaching proofreading skills will not only make the students a better writer, but they will have a more pleasant cyberspace experience.
