         <description><![CDATA[<div>Joan: we are moving to this question now<br>Suggestion if there is a leadership project required of the student in the curriculum that the practice area is required to support it means the student in coming forward with solutions to a real life problem must be supported to implement the solution "safely" TRUST between mentor-student-educator is central<br>to make a difference junior nurse leaders need to be able to adapt to the clinical practice situation&nbsp;<br><br>Summary: answer YES<br>How?<br>important for junior leader to understand the situation and have the knowledge required to give an opinion or be part of the decision making process<br>Junior nurse leader can make a difference through critical thinking (but it must be in a safe environment)..... to speak up the junior leader needs to develop courage sometimes in a system that cannot provide a safe environment all of the time<br>Working constantly to create a safe environment is everyone´'s responsibility as if it is absent it can crush as student<br>giving and responding to negative feedback that is given in a constructive way and given with time spent with the student and mentor can support the student to adjust and adapt. individual clinical support to achieve competencies <br><br><br>Following conditions favourable to make the changesupportive practice area<br>trusting relationship with mentor<br>school and curriculum require a leadership project as part of hte course that the practice area must support<br>engagement with the process of learning by the mentor and student<br>evaluation/assessment is important but not as important as developing the skill to give competent care<br>good links between the school staff and the practice area... this can make the difference!! : )<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Considerations:<br>- Good question!!!<br>- From novice to expert; knowledge needs to develop to give confidence and skills<br>- Discussions around whether this is innate or whether this can be nurtured and learnt<br>- Traits and chcracteristics need to be considered e.g. intergrity, ethics, trust and respect<br>- To be caring towards others; to have indvidual and shared visions<br>- Perceptions of leadership - who identifies leaders; do people in different positions identify different individuals as leaders<br><br>Modes of Support:<br>- Role modelling; being inspired<br>- Support from Universities and practice in identifying opportunities<br>- Organisational environment and structure<br>- Prioritising time and opportunities to lead<br>- Identifying role models and inspirational leaders<br>- Empowerment<br>- Supportive mentorship; motivation, working alongside mentors who are passionate about their role<br>- Being identified as 'leaderly' or having 'leadingship skills' when one cannot see them<br>- Nurturing motivation to lead<br><br>Challenges:<br>- Differences in training; what is valued amongst different generations of nurses and different programmes; what messages are given to students?<br>- Negativity - how this might be ´leaked´onto students<br>- Student socialisation into nursing context, Higher Education and practice contexts</div>]]></description>
