The song, Someday by The Strokes, is influenced by Emerson's essay. "Just believe in yourself. Even if you don't pretend that you do and at some point, you will." The connection between both Emerson's essay and the song is self- dependence and determination.

"Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood." Emerson uses the logos appeal to demonstrate that people are that are put down for what they believe in are those that will succeed.

"Great men have always done so and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age, betraying their perception that the Eternal was stirring at their heart, working through their hands, predominating in all their being." Emerson uses the ethos appeal to emphasize that we can only trust our hearts and what we feel.

"Accept the place the divine Providence has found for you; the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events." Emerson uses the pathos appeal to convey that we should be accepting of our own destiny.
