I’ve read farther ahead, but so far, my impression of Atticus is that he disagrees with the current racial system in the south. He is unproblematic for the most part and is kind to everyone, even if they don’t respect him back (ex. Ms. Dubose). Even though he said he took the case of Tim Robinson because it would be the most important of his life, I think part of him took it to protest against the racist roots of the town.

Now that I’ve read a little bit more, I see that Atticus is actually very patient and understanding with his children. I believe that he understands the fact that children can’t help being curious, and they aren’t aware of mature situations. He is also this way with adults, especially women, considering the time period. Mrs. DuBose was very plainly a rude and unhappy person, yet the way Atticus described her almost overshadowed everything she had ever done to Scout and Jem. I think this was his way of teaching his children to give everyone equal respect early on.
