In this story there was a poor family and 2 children named Johnnie and Grizzle. So the farmer and his wife were talking about leaving them in the woods, Johnnie heard this whole conversation. So when the farmer took them to the woods Johnnie tried multiple times to make a trail so they would not get lost, but the 2nd time the birds ate the bread trail. Then they came across a candy house, and the children started eating it. The witch opened the door and invited them inside, wanting to eat the kids. She made Grizzle her slave and tried to fatten Johnnie up to eat him. As the old lady was checking if the oven was hot enough to cook Johnnie in, Grizzle pushed her into the oven and killed her. They later escaped and came home to a now rich farmer.

There was a man and a wife that had too many children, so they couldn't get enough food for them. They decided to leave the 3 youngest in the woods. The girls ended up at a giant's home, that wanted to eat them, but later managed to escape. The 2nd home they found was a palace where the King tells Molly (the youngest) that if steals 3 things from the giant ( a small sword, a purse, and a ring) he will wed his 3 sons to her sisters and herself. Molly sneaks to the giant's home on 3 separate occasions. Each time the giant catches her, he chases her to the bridge of one hair, where he couldn't get over, but she could. On the 3rd occasion, when she was trying to steal the ring from him, he catches her and asks what she would do to him if he had done all that to her. She tells him that she would put him in a sack with a needle, thread and some shears inside along with him, hang him up on the wall and go to the woods and choose the thickest stick to take him down and beat him until he was dead. He did just that, but this was all a trap to get the giant's wife in the sack and Molly could escape. The wife was trapped in the sack and when the giant came back he took down the sack and began to beat it, not knowing his wife was inside. Molly takes the ring to the king, and got married to his son and never saw the giant again.

The Rose Tree Summary

A man had a daughter by his 1st wife and a son by the 2nd. The stepmother hated her stepdaughter. One day, the stepmother gave her money to go buy a pound of candles, but as she set down the candles on the way back home, a dog ran off with them 3 times. She returned home with no candles, so the stepmother was angry. She tricked her into letting her chop her head off by telling her that she was going to comb her hair. She chopped off her head and stewed the little girl's heart and liver and fed them to her husband and son. Her son took the body and buried it under a rose tree. In spring, when it bloomed, a bird appeared and sang in it. A shoemaker gave her red shoes, a watchmaker a golden watch, and three millers a millstone because she sang so beautifully. She flew to their home and rattled the stone on the roof. The boy ran out, and she dropped the shoes at his feet. The man ran out, and she dropped the watch at his feet. Then the stepmother ran out, and she dropped the millstone on her head, so she died.

Original Vs. Molly Whuppie

In the original story of Hansel and Gretel, their parents abandoned them in the woods because they couldn't afford enough food for all 4 of the family members. While out in the woods alone, they later find a house made out of bread and covered with cakes. While they were eating the house, an old woman comes out of the house and tells them to come. The old lady tried to fatten Hansel up to eat him, and made Gretel her slave. As she was preparing the oven to cook Hansel in, Gretel pushes her in and escapes with Hansel, later returning to their father. In "Molly Whuppie", the two parents had many children and instead of a witch they had a giant that wanted to eat them. Once they escaped from the giant, they found a king's palace, but he wanted them to steal a bunch of valuables from the giant, in return, Molly Whuppie and her two other sisters would marry his sons. Each time that Molly Whuppie went to the giant's home to steal something, she would catch her and chased her all the way to the bridge and she escaped. But on the 3rd occasion, the giant caught her and asks what would she do to him if he had stolen something from her. She told him that she would put him in a sack with some needle, thread, and scissors, and hit him with a stick until he dies. Then, while he was getting the thickest stick, she escaped, leaving the wife trapped in the sack. The similarities that both stories share are that they both have an antagonist. Both of the antagonists are cannibals. Also, in the beginning of both stories, the parents both abandoned the children because they didn't have enough to eat for the entire family. In the end, they both had happy endings, since the children didn't get eaten.
