Throughout the past decades in Greece, families encouraged students to follow a career in STEM professions. Due to econimical problems the past 5 or so years the STEM jobs are difficult to be found in Greece. However, there is a demand in STEM jobs abroad so many of those STEM professionals went abroad. It's very sad to say this, but in my region there is an overflowing quantity of STEM university graduates -and many other disciplines- who can hardly live on their jobs or who cannot find a job at all. Most of these new graduates end working in jobs they are overqualified for, and others have to go abroad in order to work in their respective fields.

If I consider my whole country as being my region I must say that its main economical basis is tourism. But we must have into account that our tourism appeal is build on two essential parameters: nature and food.

I agree with my Spanish colleagues: our main problem is STEM brain-drain.
Spanish science and technology are very appreciated around the world: we are top in high-speed railway, water-saving technology or solar energy.
But no prophet is without honour except in his native place. Spain is now developing its high-speed railway, the government doesn't boost clean energies and water desalination has some ecological problems.
Where I live, we need STEM professionals to solve these problems with brines, or to develop even more efficient agricultural systems. Tourism is an economic engine in my country, and maybe STEM professionals could reduce its environmental impact.
We need to reinventing our educational system, not only we need waiters.

Young people invest time to study a degree in the university but they have to travel abroad to find a job related to their studies. I live in the center of Italy, in a small rural village. Most locals cultivate hazelnuts and they think do not need STEM so much. But our lake is polluted by fertilizers, our air is contaminated by pesticides and our land by herbicides ... I think they need, really WE need, STEM to fight pollution, to find new fertilizer, and herbicides. But in Italy, in general, STEM skills are lacking and I have often heard say: "I don’t like math, it's not for me!" The fact is that in Italy - as young as adults - we are far from excellent results compared to basic STEM knowledge. But why? STEM represents an abstract language, which makes it difficult to teach and learn. In order for pupils to learn very well, a manipulative methodology must be used, which allows the abstract language of STEM to be brought closer to the concrete and everyday life of the pupil.

The reason for studying math is that it serves. Without derivatives and integrals, we would not have mechanical and electromagnetic technology, from cars to phones. I agree, the employment market in Spain is complicated, and there are lots of STEM qualified people who don’t have a job or they must accept a very under qualified one for them. But this situation is maintained since more than 20 years ago, during which the STEM graduates had to emigrate or accept jobs with very low income and bad labour conditions.

Being realistic, there is difficult to say what STEM professions are necessary in my region, because most of them must go out of it, even out of the country.

Certainly it seems that there is a lack of medical professionals. But there are lots of medical science graduates indeed, the problem is the very poor conditions offered nowadays in these works.
