This is a reflection off of the work I’ve done for the sculpture I made from clay, in my three dimensional art class.

The original Idea was to make a simple head of a man, but I decided to go with a character I already know about, from a piece of media called “Welcome Home.” And analogue horror project, and the character in question is named Eddie Dear.

I am pretty skilled with clay, if I may toot my own horn. I’ve always been really good with my hands when it came to crafting things. Though this was a piece of 3D media.

The textures I decided to go for, were that of realism, while also trying to keep up the idea of this being a Puppet. However it IS way more humanoid than I was going for, I’m completely satisfied with it regardless.

I can’t say either part of it was easy. However, I think the most simple part of this project was definitely the Shape of the face. It was fairly easy to do, but it came with its challenges.

There isn’t necessarily anything I’d like to change. I would however, like to try and make the apperence of the head more puppet like. As I’ve stated before, the original idea was to craft a realistic (more or less) head of a human man. But I switched up the idea last second. As I’ve stated before however, I am fully satisfied with how the projected turned out regardless.

My original idea for the clay head project was to create a head with full features to create a perfect statue.

Sculpting the basic shapes of the skull and refining secondary features provides both challenge and opportunity for creative expression. Even though this was my first time trying sculpting, it was extremely interesting to me. In the elementary form, I focus on achieving anatomical accuracy while infusing personality into facial features such as the eyes, nose, and mouth. In the secondary form, I try to create my own stylistic highlights. Like the fact that I added slightly scary details because it was during Halloween so I found it very interesting.

Texture plays an important role in enhancing the visual composition of my clay head. I combine mainly clay, with many overlapping layers to create a solid surface. In addition, I use color to bring visual interest to the work. Then, finally, I mirror the work to give it a certain shine.

The process of implementing this project was challenging but also extremely rewarding because it required precision and attention to detail. Incorporating texture added a layer of complexity but it contributed significantly to the overall aesthetic. And you can freely decorate it, adding your own personality to your work.

If I do the exercise again, I may change in learning how to express hair more smoothly. Maybe a little tweak on creating a curly hair, I think it would be more suitable for my work. But overall I learned a lot through this project. It tells me the sculpting skill, the steps to complete it. So if I have the chance, I will learn sculpting to make new things.

Reflect upon your work

I had fun with this project and learned so much helpful knowledge. My favorite part was to glaze the sculpture and see it glow up after being fired in the kiln.

What was your original idea and how did you come up with it?

My original idea was to make a beautiful female, and since I have always been fascinated by mythological creatures, I have decided to make a mermaid portrait with greenish floating hair, mysterious blue eyes, and plump red lips.

Was it difficult to sculpt the primary and secondary forms?

I had trouble trying to sculpt the secondary forms, including the lips and eyes, as this was my first time learning sculpture. Nevertheless, I had tons of fun trying to figure things out one by one and, eventually, put on some makeup for the girl.

How did you incorporate texture? Did it add to the visual composition?

I decided to make her hair thin and floating to recreate this kind of underwater scene. Her hair also looks like seaweed in a way which helps exhibit the idea of a mermaid. I think the hair did make the visual composition look more interesting.

What was easy and what was challenging?

It was easy to sculpt the primary form since the professor had given precise and thorough instructions that were easy to follow and understand. She also assisted me a lot in fixing the head’s form. What was challenging was the hair, which required lots of patience and time. As they are fragile and delicate, I had to spend quite some time sculpting them and attaching them to the head while having to be very careful not to break them.

What would you change if you could redo the assignment?

If I could redo the assignment, I would like to make the head bigger and spend more time sculpting the secondary forms, including the eyes, lips, and hair.

My original ideas were inspired by the Ancient Greek sculptures created in white clay. I did simple Google searches for head sculptures and was immediately drawn to them. I admit it was difficult. Concerning texture, I aimed to add hair with volume and texture. Working with the clay posed challenges. However, after some time, I got used to it, and that's when it became easier. If I could change or redo that assignment, I think I would improve the likeness of the facial structure, making it more rounded and reducing the sharp edges.

What was your original idea and how did you come up with it?

My original idea for my piece was wanting to represent the usual features found in my family, since many famous sculptures had Eurocentric features. My family is both from African American and Filipino decent so I wanted to base it off that.

Was it difficult to sculpt the primary and secondary forms?

I found the primary form to be the easier part, but I was often worried on if the scaling of the primary form was how I wanted it to be, since the final head would depend on the primary form. The secondary form was the hardest part, since it was my first time ever sculpting, I struggled with how to add the features let alone stylize them. But the more I continued the easier it got.

How did you incorporate texture? Did it add to the visual composition?

I mostly incorporated texture through the hair. It added to the visual composition as I feel like it was a contrast to the more smoother skin and rest of the features. After sculpting I also decided to go in with a thin tool to add swirls and lines to emphasize the curly hair pattern.

What was easy and what was challenging?

I think the most challenging part of this sculpture was trying to make the face symmetrical, as well as trying to translate the way the sculpture looks like in your head or on paper onto the actual sculpture. I struggled with the nose and mouth especially, and the initial placement of the eyes.

What would you change if you could redo the assignment?

What I would change if I could redo the assignment was give my sculpture more of an afro texture to the hair instead of my own looser curl pattern. My original plan was giving her an afro, but it was a bit too difficult for me. I also want to make the face a bit more symmetrical.

It was my first time sculpting a head, so i decided to instead create a random head. I sculpted the head without planning how it would look like.

Was it difficult to sculpt the primary and secondary forms?

When i was first sculpting the neck for the head it was very difficult for me to make the neck. I had a hard time at the start of the sculpture but later got the hang of it. The eyes were also very difficult for me to make.

How did you incorporate texture? Did it add to the visual composition?

The top of the head has texture. I added hair that has bumps all over the top of the head. It has lines/streaks. The face and neck also have some texture to them.

What was easy and what was challenging?

The hair of my head sculpture was the easiest part to make. The challenging part of making the neck of the head. I kept on redoing the size or length of the neck and it looked messy looking so i had to fix that too.

What would you change if you could redo the assignment?

If i had to change something it would be the eyes and mouth. It was difficult to sculpt and they didn't turn out like i wanted them to look like.

I think that the bust in this photo is not very much of someone who gives too much vibes, if any vibes at all. He is not much of a talker or very emotional, much like the actual Calvin Coolidge. He is very much a thinker and someone who speaks only when he has too, owing to Coolidge's notorious reputation of being very quiet.

I wanted to make a bust to honor my favorite president.

It was very difficult to sculp a realistic human head.

I used a fork to create his hair and facial features.

The easy part was his emotions (he has none).

I would make it bigger.

This was pretty fun! My original idea was a zombie because it was around halloween, and I like how it came out. He really does look kinda freaky! I incorporated texture through the form, which sorta gives me a rotting flesh vibe. It was hard to get an idea across, but it was easy making details! If I could redo it, I probably would've gone a different direction with the hair.

My original idea was to create something more abstract looking. I thought since it was my first time using clay like this that it would be really difficult to make the features look accurate to real life. I also wanted to paint it after it got fired but I changed my mind. I did not want to take away from how well the features came out. I liked the color of the clay I chose and that you can really look close to see the details of what what my hands made.

It was not as hard as I thought it would be to create the first and secondary forms. The only thing is that my nails were pretty long so I wasn’t able to use my fingers tips to smooth little areas out like I wanted to. I attempted to use tools for that but it didn’t give the exact look I was going for.

I incorporated texture by using a wet sponge tool all over which made it smooth but looked a bit rough. A little plaster like when you look closely and you can feel it a bit when you touch it.

In my opinion this assignment was not too difficult. I was able to pretty much figure out all the features on my first try and just smooth them out to become as symmetrical as I could. I guess the symmetry was the most difficult part since I did end up wanting to make it as accurate to real life.

What I would change if I redid the assignment is to smooth everything out a little more. It bothers me that there’s cracks or that you can tell where I used my fingers to press in some areas.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project and it made me want to take a ceramics class in the future.

Reflect upon your work

1. What was your original idea and how did you come up with it?

This is my second time sculpting, the first time I completely failed, but this time I tried a lot harder. My first idea was to make an art statue, but after a while I made a statue of my husband.

2. Was it difficult to sculpt the primary and secondary forms?

I found it a bit challenging when working on small details like eyes, nose, mouth, chin, and cheekbones because this step involves shaping, and I made an effort to adhere to the original idea as closely as possible.

3. How did you incorporate texture? Did it add to the visual composition?

I tried to create details for the hair and neck skin and tendons. And then I just use one material to embed my entire statue in, simply and to highlight the details of the statue. Yes, I think it adds to the visual composition, it makes the statue more alive and real.

4. What was easy and what was challenging?

The easy thing here is to follow the instructions step by step, from start to finish following the professor's instructions, I did not go wrong.
