New Canada Food Guide meal resonates best in B.C., not so much elsewhere.

Tristan Kinzinger

The food guide is good for B.C. because 40% of people in B.C. are vegans or vegetarians, but it is not good for the rest of Canada because most Canadians aren't vegans or vegetarians. The food guide was made this way because the government wants people to eat healthier because restaurant sales have doubled within the last 20 years and 71% of Canadians eat take out because it is more convenient and don't have the patience to make real food.

Canada’s new food guide on the globe and mail website is claiming that the guide is dropping the 4 food groups and is entering hydration. The federal government has dramatically overhauled its iconic Canada’s Food Guide, introducing this week a new, simplified approach that encourages plant-based eating and reduces the emphasis on meat and dairy.

Darrius and Sam

The Article from Chateline.com ("Canada's New Food Guide Is Here. Everything You Need To Know" January 22nd, 2019) says the food guide recommends these protions: 50% Vegetables, 25% Protein and 25% Whole-Grains. It also says that water should be your drink of choice. The website says that the new food guide is much more vague compared to the old, single-page rainbow food guide. It also says we should limit our sodium, suger and saturated fat intake, whenever possible. Health Canada reviewed over 100 systematic reviews on food guides in order to prepare the documents for "Canada's Dietary Guidelines". The article says "The final document is based on what they believe to be the most up-to-date nutrition science". The guide is focused on plant-based proteins, whole grains (not refined), and cutting back on sugar. Part 2 of the guide, Portion Sizes, will be released later in 2019.
