The purpose of this site is to be a resource that educators can use to learn about Universal Design for learning and how Assistive Technology can be used with UDL in practice. You will find examples of how AT fits into each UDL principle. You will also discover three specific areas of AT (writing, reading, & BVI) and which specific AT resources you can use for each area.

Assistive Technology Tools for Multiple Means of Representation

Multiple means of representation deals with how information is presented to students. Also known as the recognition network, this principle targets the brain’s ability to process and perceive information. For brains there are always strengths and weaknesses when it comes to processing and perceiving information. The three common structures are visual, physical, and auditory. This network provides multiple different modalities so that all brains can access the content that is being presented to them.

Text to Speech - This allows students to receive printed information, both physical and digital, to hear the information read back to them. This is a very good tool for students with strengths auditorily.

Digital Graphic Organizer - Allows students to use many different elements to compile and represent information. They can use graphics and audio to boost the information.

Captions on Videos - Allows students visually process auditory information. Also allows students to access a transcript of a video, to highlight important information.

EdPuzzle/Nearpod

Neurocognitively the affective network is targeting the learner’s ability to use their own resources to affectively learn a task. What are students bringing to the table to be able to complete tasks? And what external supports are needed to be able to complete that task? The affective network derives the students' abilities to self-regulate, maintain interest, and maintain effort. As educators we have to look for what supports are going to properly supplement each portion of the affective network, so we can develop expert learners.

Technology Options:

Online Checklists

Zoom/Google Meet Options

Online Formative Assessments (Google Forms)

Digital Quiz Cards (Quizlet)

Resources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N05k3G3OMas

https://www.texthelp.com/resources/universal-design-for-learning/technology-and-udl/

Multiple means of action and expression or the strategic network targets the learner’s part of the brain that plans and completes tasks. All students have their own preferences as to how they wish to complete tasks. Cognitively, this is how a student plans to complete tasks, how a student will show what they have learned, and how students will use different tools and supports to complete a task. Providing explicit options for how they will show what they know, will allow students brains to decide which formats will be the best course of action for them

Technology Options:

Multiple forms of Presentation (Voicethread, PPT, Picktochart, Canva, etc...)

Speech to Text options on writing assignments

Access to Alternative Keyboards

Resources: https://www.sutori.com/en/story/assistive-technology-and-the-udl-guideline-multiple-means-of-action--zNbr1crHdsM8FYMNwT62a44g
