Characteristics
The polyphony was developed and was used in secular religious music whether vocal or  instrumental. 
The songs were written.
Music was spread with score writting and thanks to travelling musicians. And was consolidated with  instrumental treatises, songbooks and dance collection.
Musicians became a profession

Polyphonic and counterpoint
Several melodic lines sound simultaneously. The
Parts are independent and often imitate each other.
It is a characteristic  of canons and Renaissance music.
Homophonic
The different parts move together simultaneously,
forming block chords.
-Accompained melody
One part or voice carries the main melody, and it’s accompanied by chords.
No melody
Music which does not follow pre-established rules.

The religious changes influenced music profoundly  as each church adopted different musical styles and forms.
Martin Luther who started the Protestant reformation  supported the singing of chorales  which are religious songs in German and sung in unison.
The Anglican Church created polyphonic hymns sung in English. 
The main religious musical forms were the motet and the Mass.
