As they read, you may ask questions like: "How does your book start?" "Who are the characters?" "What problem/conflict is brewing?" " How did the character feel about the problem?" "What is the most intense part of the story?"

Towards the end, you may ask: "How have things changed from the beginning?" "How were the conflicts resolved?"

VOCABULARY 9.13.19     
Students had an opportunity to add to their vocabulary during class.  These words and their definitions should be copied in the vocab section of their 5 Subject NB. 
Preview means to look at the front and back cover of a book, scan through its pages to see how it is organized. 

Infer means to make a logical guess using clues from a text and/or past experiences. 

Visualize means to make mental pictures/a movie during reading to help with comprehension.  

A noun is a part of speech that names a person, place, or thing. 

A pronoun is a part of speech that replaces a noun.

A preposition is a part of speech that shows a nouns location or relation to another noun. 

A verb is a word that shows action.

An adverb is a word that describes an action and tell when it occurs.  

Making Connections is a reading strategy that involves readers relating to the text: Text to self, Text to text, text to world

Interjection is a word that shows strong emotion.

Adjective is a word that describes a noun.

An article is a word that specifies a noun (the, a, an).

A conjunction is a word that is used to connect sentences.  (Coordinating conjunctions: FANBOYS)

Predict is a reading strategy that requires readers to guess what will happen next in a story using clues in the text. 

Asking Questions is a strategy that requires readers to ask questions during reading to help increase their understanding of what is going on in the text. 

Summarize is a reading strategy where readers retell the story in order from beginning to end.  

Respond is a reading strategy where readers write about or discuss events that took place in a story and make recommendations or answer comprehension questions that follows the reading. 

Plot is the sequence of events that take place within a story.

Exposition is the part of the story that introduces the characters and setting.

Rising Action is the part of the story events lead up to a problem.  

Climax is the turning point of the story.  This is where the conflict is the biggest and characters change. A lesson is learned by the characters.

Falling Action is where problems are beginning to be solved; story calms down

Resolution is where the problem is solved

Characterization is the process in which the author reveals the personality of characters

Indirect characterization is where the author provides hints about the personality of the character.  Inferring is needed.

Direct characterization is where the author directly tells the personality of the character through various adjectives.


9.25.19 Why We Write?
Today, students discussed 10 reasons why writing is important.  After discussing each, students were asked to self assess.  Students examined their strengths and weaknesses in writing.  Then, they were asked to create 5-6 writing goals that they plan to reach by the end of the year. 
Homework: Add 2 more goals to your list of Writing Goals.  Share with a parent.  Parent sign off on goals.
