(Old)School Climate Reflections by Alicia Duell

Answer 2-3 of the following questions about your own elementary/middle/high school:
1.How supportive and caring were most of the teachers?
2. Did you feel a sense of safety from violence and bullying?
3. How connected did most students feel to the school?
4. How involved were parents?
5. How did teachers and administrators seem to get along with each other?

I remember my teachers being pretty warm and supportive, but not necessarily getting to know me as a person. I don't remember talking to them much about after school activities, or my family, or anything personal. I do remember my principal used to walk around at lunch and recess quizzing us on spelling words ("February" and "Wednesday" were particular favorites of his)! Parents did not come to the school except for holiday parties, when we could still bring in cupcakes, cookies, and candy, but I think that was the only time.

I remember the teachers as a leader in the front of the room. I don't remember any small group work where a teacher would get to know me better....except for one teacher that I had for third grade and then he moved to 5th grade and I had him again...I think he knew me best. I remember school as a safe place but no atmosphere of school spirit with a mascot or anything like that. I am sure my parents were involved in PTA and they helped run the fun fair each year but I don't remember any other involvement. There was no team teaching and I didn't see any teacher collaboration taking place.

Most of my teachers were supportive and caring. I remember my 4th grade teacher asking about each of our lives outside of school. In 2nd grade, my teacher had "Team Tuesdays," where we meet as a class to touch base on our lives as well as talk about creating a sense of safe community. I think the teachers had a big impact on student's connection to school. There was also a lot of parental involvement for class parties and such.

Our elementary school was HUGE. There was one building for K-1, a building for 2-3, and 4-5. All students in those grades in the district went to that building. We were broken up in "halls" and within our hall we were very connected. There was not a great whole school climate since we were always so divided. However, we had wonderful teachers and growing up I always felt parents were involved in their child's education.

It was a brand new school that teachers were able to help collaborate on everything starting from the building phase. Teachers worked as a team to provide instruction to all. Teachers and administrators worked as one. The parents were art awareness who would come in and do art lessons with the class.
