Reading more of Robin Wood's ideas, read today an excerpt from his chapter The American Nightmare - Horror in the 70's. Wood speaks of two types of repression; basic and surplus. Basic is the internal ability to abide by societal customs to benefit the community, sacrificing the inner animal, and then surplus is the societal oppression of groups or individuals that challenged the status quo or civilisations notions about what is acceptable and what is not.

Many monster movies subscribe to this idea, with the monster being the fears of the bourgeois of society.

Wood also suggests that a horror movies ending reflects its politics; conservative films end with the monster or threat being repressed, nothing changes, progressive films end with a recognition of the repressed, and a change. I agree with this point.

I would like to interview an academic; maybe Mark Jancovich of East Anglia University, as I have been reading some of his article writing.

Maybe I could also do a focus group, asking participants what they consider to be the most important part of their identity's.

Today's session made me consider the ethical side of conducting research, with some horror stories being told by our lecturers!
