The background shows Dorian Gray out and about one night in the gloomy, rainy streets of England. He has grown used to roaming these streets reflecting on his life. The portrayal of this dark, dull city ties into how Dorian Gray feels about himself on the inside as he is nothing without his youth and beauty.

Dorian Gray's Portrait

It has always been said not to judge a book by its cover and Dorian Gray is a prime example as to the reason why. Although, Dorian is a beautiful man on the outside he is far from that on the inside. Dorian believes that without his beauty and youth he will be nothing. The portrait shows the two sides of Dorian, the inside which is an empty and shallow soul, while the outside which is pure beauty. His appearance on the outside does not reflect his actual identity.
