In this compilation of three brief and autobiographical very beautiful portraits, the author describes three episodes from his childhood, spent away for his parents with some very distant relatives, who "had the power to make him cry frequently".

There, Miss Sook, a beloved distant cousin of "sixty-something" who has a small but very resilient terrier called Queenie, teaches her precious and wise lessons about generosity, gratitude and forgiveness, although she (like our protagonist Buddy), is still a child of seven.

In the first tale, titled "A Christmas Memory", she teaches him to work hard to get what they need to bake thirty fruit cakes to give to almost strangers (because when you are extremely shy, only strangers are seen as true friends), even President Roosevelt, just "because it's Christmas".

In the second story, "The Thanksgiving Visitor," Miss Sook teaches Buddy, in a wise and tender way, to share his most precious treasures with those who had fewer opportunities than us, even if they behave in the worst way, or are "the last person you would want as a friend".

At the end, we find "A Christmas"; a bittersweet and nostalgic story that marked deeply to Capote.

There, he must leave Miss Sook at Christmas, doing by himself a very long bus trip to New Orleans, to spend Christmas with an absolutely unknown relative, his father, who, even the Great Depression, seems to have everything... except Buddy's affection. Because, except for Miss Sook and Queenie, Buddy doesn't have a very clear idea what's the meaning of love.

If you want to relax by reading a book after a long day of work, this is not your book. "Crime story collection" is a compilation of murder stories written by the most important mystery writers of the 20th century, like Sara Paretsky, Margery Allingham or Patricia Highsmith among others. In these stories, we can see different perceptions of a murder and "what can drive a person to murder".

The mysterious atmosphere sorrounding all the chapters (or stories) and the short-length stories makes the reader get into the plot easily and enjoy the reading experience more than with conventional mystery books. Do you have trouble reading in english? Don't worry, this book uses a grammar structure adapted to the B2 level with an easy to comprehend vocabulary. The only thing I do not recomend it's reading this book at night.

This novel is set during the roaring twenties in New York. Fitzgerald makes a strong criticism of the aristrocazy of that time. The author shows us this through the characters. Gastby, the main one, is a rich man who lives in a huge house. He often gives luxury parties. Everyone goes to the parties at Gastby's beautiful house although no one knows how he became so rich and who he actually is.
He believes that despite his poor background he can have everything he wants: wealth, succes and the most important for him, Daisy, an old love. The main plot is a love story and finding out Gastby's past, but there are many interesting secondary plots with other complicated characters, too. All of them make you pay attention all the time until an unexpected ending. The novel is narrated by Nick, a character who is a witness to everything that happens around him.

I like how the author creates the atmosphere of that time and the way he reflects the American dream and its failure. I don't like some characters' personality. They're unfriendly and unpleasant.
In my opinion, it's an entertaining, sad story with a lot of symbolism.
This novel is a classic work and it's considered one of the best novels in the XX century.

I really liked this book. If you want to read something short but very interesting and also improve your english, this is your book.

The story is about the espionage task of a character named Taylor, who must uncover the assassin of England's Minister of Defense. I SPY is a good mix of plot and characters that end up captivating the reader, each chapter allows you to learn more about the main character while following the exploits he must go through to discover the truth.

The ending is a bit unexpected but I think you end up understanding that this is how it happens in spy stories. Taylor was not only a secret agent but also a human being dealing with a life he didn't enjoy very much. Apparently Jeremy Harper, the writer, doesn't hide this human side.

100% recommended, a good way to learn new words, improve your reading comprehension and above all improve your reading habits.

This book is based on the literary adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play ‘’Pygmalion‘’.

My Fair Lady is the story of Eliza Dootlittle, a London flower seller with a very strong accent, and Professor Higgins, a specialist in phonetics and the man who decides to teach her to speak English without her accent.

He decides to carry out a professional experiment, becoming the flower seller into a respectable lady of high society in just six months. But Higgins' treatment to Eliza is not entirely correct; the professor is only concerned with Eliza's diction, the perfection of her voice, and the exquisite manners she has acquired.

His experiment becomes a success, but Higgins forgets something very important: the young woman's feelings.

The book raises questions about how language and education can change the perception of a person in society. As a result, combines humour, romance and social criticism, making it a timeless classic.

It is an enjoyable book, nevertheless, I think the film is wonderful; it stars by Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

It’s a magical book because the story of Capote bring a sense of coming winter and coming christmas holiday. The sound, the smell and the images that provoked the descriptions he made in the story. Capote uses a tone that seems he goes back to the past, that he remembers that time so well that he looks like he is living it at that very moment and makes you go down in history with him. I find difficult to read because the author uses a vocabulary that i didn’t know before, but i really like the story and it helps me to improve a little more my english.

In this book, Charles Dickens introduces us several characters who lived in London in the early 19th century.

The story begins with an eternal trial called "The case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce" about the inheritance of that family and with three orphans who are taken in a house called ‘Blake House’, owned by Mr. Jarndyce, the name of the house comes from how sad and desolate that house was before the teenagers arrived.

The whole story is told by one of the characters, Esther Summerson, at the beginning, the characters are introduced separately with their own lives, but as the story progresses, we see that they are not so unknown to each other and that in one way or another they have something in common.

In my opinion, it is a very interesting book and I recommended it for those readers who like novels about people living in the past and over all those readers who love intrigue and mystery.

The Cut-Glass Bowl and other stories

`The Cut-Glass Bowl and other stories', written by E. Scott Fitzgeraldc, is a collection of five short stories that revolve around fate and revenge.

In `The Cut-Glass Bowl', , the main character receives a `poisoned' wedding gift from a friend. It's a gift “as hard, cold and beautiful as you are,” he said, and the message soon takes on a cruel meaning.

`Bernices Bobs her hair´ because her cousin advises her to do so in order to be more popular with the boys. It was perverse advice and a bad decision and her cousin would pay the consequences.

In `Gretchen Forty Winks', the author sends a clear message with a lot of irony: Stay out of other people's lives. Better mind your own business.

In “Magnetism”, the protagonist is a rich and beautiful movie star. That may sound wonderful but success often also brings with it other things like envy from others and their evil intentions.

Donald has “three hours between planes” in his hometown and decides to visit his childhood sweetheart. Will it be as Donald imagined? Maybe there are happy memories that are better off remaining just memories.

All the stories are very entertaining and easy to read.

Although they are set in 1920's New York, their little morals are still very topical. Highly recommended.

The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest is a lighthearted comedy centered around two characters, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who lead double lives to escape the constraints of Victorian society. Jack invents a fictional brother, “Ernest,” allowing him to enjoy a freer life in the city. Meanwhile, Algernon uses a similar tactic to avoid unwanted social obligations. Complications arise when both men fall in love, and their fiancées insist they can only marry someone named “Ernest.” The play humorously explores themes of deception, love, and the absurdity of social conventions. Wilde’s signature wit and satire shine in this adaptation. The play effectively critiques the rigid social norms of the Victorian era, highlighting the hypocrisy and superficiality of its characters. What stands out is Wilde’s clever use of language and irony, which keeps the story engaging and thought-provoking. The humor, though light, carries a deeper message about identity and societal expectations. This Oxford Bookworms edition simplifies the text without losing the essence of Wilde’s humor, making it accessible to intermediate English learners. However, some of the subtle nuances of the original may feel slightly diluted due to the simplified language. Despite this, the story’s core themes and Wilde’s playful tone remain intact, making it enjoyable and educational.

Recommendation

This book is well-suited for learners looking to improve their English while engaging with classic literature. Its humor and social commentary make it an entertaining read. I would recommend it to readers who appreciate witty comedies and those interested in exploring social critique through a lighthearted narrative.

I have heard the story of Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde many times, but I had never read about it. This book has a good level of vocabulary to improve your English and helps you understand a short but complex story with many protagonists.

This story talks about a group of people who know each other, but one of them begins to have strange behaviors, in addition to starting a series of murders in the city. All this leads to looking for the clues of these murders, the strange behavior of one of the scientists and a strange testament makes them suspicious and they try to solve it but the only clue they have is that the murderer appears to be a demon.

In short, this book tells us about human behavior and its two faces, angel or demon. It is a short and quick book to read. I recommend it for people who have little time but like to read

Silvia Broome works as an interpreter at the United Nations in New York City. She is originally from Matobo, a place marked by political conflict and violence. One night, while in the UN building, Silvia accidentally overhears a conversation in Ku, a rare African language. The conversation reveals a plan to assassinate President Zuwanie of Matobo during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

Silvia reports the incident to the authorities, and Tobin Keller, a federal agent, is assigned to protect her and investigate the threat. However, Keller becomes suspicious of Silvia when he learns that her family suffered under Zuwanie’s regime and that her brother was killed by his forces. This leads Keller to suspect that Silvia might be involved in the plot or even seeking personal revenge.

As the investigation progresses, Silvia is pursued by the conspirators, who try to silence her. Meanwhile, Zuwanie, who portrays himself as a leader seeking peace, is actually a dictator who has committed heinous crimes in his country. Silvia faces a moral dilemma: should she save such a corrupt man or allow him to be killed?

Finally, Silvia decides to take matters into her own hands. During Zuwanie’s speech at the UN, she manages to infiltrate the room with a weapon. In a moment of direct confrontation, Silvia has the chance to kill him but chooses not to, showing that she will not lower herself to the violent tactics of her enemy. Instead, Silvia allows Zuwanie to be arrested and held accountable in international courts for his crimes against humanity.

Jack London is a writer who had a life as wild as his books. "The Call Of the Wild" was one of his early works. This is a good book, one of the most entertaining books I have ever read. It’s a bit sad in some parts, but you can’t stop reading. It’s about our most primal instincts and origins, and the fact that we must not forget them.

What I liked the most is how well it details the world from the perspective of animals and nature.
