Araminta Ross, later renamed Harriet Tubman, was born into slavery and escaped in the late 1840's to begin the "Underground Railroad". The "Underground Railroad" was a system that Harriet Tubman started after she had escaped from her slave master in 1849. Harriet Tubman was the "Moses" of her time, helping other slaves escape to a life of freedom. Harriet Tubman also assisted in the Civil War by being a spy and a scout for the United States army . Since Harriet Tubman had so much experience traveling across the land from the underground railroad, she knew the land structure very well which allowed her to be an asset during the Civil War as a spy.

Bleeding Kansas, also known as the Border War, was a period of violent confrontations between pro-slavery and anti-slavery abolitionists when the decision of Kansas territory was being made to become a slave state or a free state. John Brown was an anti slavery abolitionist who came to Kansas to fight to put an end to slavery. John Brown and his sons lead an attack on pro slavery abolitionist. John Brown justified his actions as the will off God, and was soon seen as a hero in the northern erst eyes. In an effort to calm the war, the territorial governor, John W. Geary sent in federal troops. The term "bleeding kansas" was coined by Horace Greely, a writer for the new York times, to describe the events that had happened in the Kansas territory.

Nat Turner's Rebellion was a failed slave revolt in 1831 in Southampton County, Virginia. This rebellion was lead by Nat Turner, a minister from Virginia, and he claimed that God's will for his life was to lead a slave revolt. Of the many people killed by the slaves, Joseph Travis, Nat Turner's slave master, was one of the victims. After two months of the revolt, the leader, Nat Turner was captured by a farmer in Richmond, Virginia. After Nat Turner was captured, twenty judges, all of which were slave holders, sentenced at least 50 slave followers to be executed. Since the leader of the revolt had been captured the slave revolt failed.

Kansas Nebraska Act

The Kansas Nebraska Act was one of the most significant events that lead up to the Civil War. Business owners and people trying to find a place to land wanted to move into the Nebraska territory. The people would not officially move in yet because they could not technically claim any land yet because this area had not been claimed as a certain territory. Congress was in no rush to determine what territory it was because it fell above the line the determined whether the territory became a slave state or a free state. This line was the was the 36 degree 30' parallel line which was a boundary set by The Compromise of 1820 which stated that anything above the line was a free territory or state and anything below the line was considered a slave territory or state.
