Activity Title: Bee House Design Challenge

Objective: To use ICT tools to research, organize, evaluate, and synthesize information to design a bee house that will conserve biodiversity.


Materials:


  • Access to a computer or tablet with internet access
  • Presentation software such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Keynote
  • Design app such as canva
  • Video editing software such as filmora, Capcut, adobe premiere pro etc


INTRODUCTION

Bees are an excellent example of the impact of biodiversity loss. They play a crucial role in pollination, which is essential for food production and maintaining healthy ecosystems. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), around 75% of global food crops rely on pollinators, including bees.
However, many bee populations worldwide are declining due to various factors, including habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and disease. Here are some statistics on the decline of bees:

  • According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 24% of the 1,965 species of bees assessed globally are threatened with extinction.
  • In the United States, honeybee colonies' population has declined by more than 40% since 2010, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
  • In Europe, 10% of bee and butterfly species face extinction, and over 37% are declining, according to the European Red List of Bees and the European Red List of Butterflies.

I made slight changes to the design though. They are:
1. I added observation windows. In order for the farmer to inspect parts like the full depth hive body without disturbing the bees an observation is ideal.
2. I added plastic inner coverings. This inner covering is used so as to prevent bees from escaping through the observation window.
3. I added planting trays. This tray is used for planting flowers so the bees can both pollinate them and gain nectar from them. It is logical to have a garden around so it can give them more flower variety, but for those who don’t have one this is the next best thing.
4. I added sugar water holders. This small hexagons help hold food for the bees which is water and sugar, this is another alternative for people who rare bees in a place without any garden or flowers.
5. I added foundation frames. These types of frames guide the Combe making process of bees, making their combs straight and uniform allowing for easy honey extraction. I use bee wax to make these to make it more natural.

Probable Cost: 170 000 - 190 000NAIRA

MATERIALS: Untreated Cedar Wood, Galvanized Steel, Plastic, Wood Glue, Screws.
