I don't think contacting home for attendance should fall on teachers. If a student is skipping only my class, sure I need to notify home, but I don't think the onus for students who never or rarely attend school should be our responsibility. Why am I being told that I need to call home every time someone is out? Is there even a consequence for that anymore? I'm struggling to see why I should spend my planning time making these calls when we have an attendance system.

We are losing the battle against lateness. Walk through the corridors anytime after lunch and you see groups of students everywhere. They don't go to class when they are addressed- they just redirect their path. Can we not initiate a tougher penalty for lateness? Could we have a specific weekly detention just for lateness? It feels like we are really on our own with this problem. Please don't just leave it up to teachers to handle it "as they see fit." Outline a process that we can easily follow and communicate to the students.

Phone policy. I know that we are basically told that we can "do our own thing", but if each teacher "does their own thing" what's the message? No consistent and easily enforceable phone policy under our current circumstances is a huge threat to our student's ability to make the most of their days here at GHS.

Rather than have students sit in a room doing nothing, can there be restorative justice conversations or reflections? Opportunities to earn SSL hours? Other ideas? Teachers plan their classes in advance and being told THE DAY OF that we are losing a class period (or even part of it) is disrespectful to our time. If it's unannounced, sure--we can't help that. But if you're going to announce it, at least have enough respect for us as educators to give us more than a few hours warning.

This wouldn't be as frustrating if this wasn't the first time something like this has happened, but we are told things last minute quite often here.
No Communication From Parents

The grading policy states that we are not allowed to give students a zero unless there has been "two way communication." What if we take the appropriate steps of communication but NEVER hear back from the parents? I don't feel it is fair to give students 50% on anything that they have not done AT ALL. In some cases, it raises the students grade enough to pass the class rather than fail. I feel that is not fair to the other students who are working hard for their grade.

I hear your frustrations with cell phone use by students in class. Since we do not have a school-wide policy for storing phones during class instruction, here is something I have found helpful if you're interested in trying it.
You might try having students put phones in a wall-mounted pocket (like what headphones are in /shoe holders) as they enter class. I have relatively small classes (10 - 18) and it usually takes a couple of days to have the system down. It may take a couple of weeks of conditioning for larger classes, but I find it well worth the time invested at the beginning of the semester.

I find it very difficult to handle the amount of new students being transferred into my class this far into the semester. Interims are on Monday and the transfers make it increasingly difficult to make sure the student gets what they need. If we could possibly try to minimize the amount of schedule changes (especially for reasons that should have been caught earlier in the semester and sometimes year), I'm sure many of us would appreciate it.

Can we please have a systematic way of informing teachers of classroom assignment changes (a week ahead of time if possible)?
I was assigned completely new classrooms 2nd semester and if I hadn't looked at Synergy and noticed the classroom number the day before I would not have known. In addition, the teachers who were in those rooms did not know either until the last minute. It makes having all of our materials and the classroom set up a game of catchup and honestly, a very awkward situation with asking those who were in the classroom to move/take down their materials if they don't do it on their own. This isn't the first time this has happened.
