The US is currently facing a problem arguing over the historical value of monuments erected for Confederate war "heroes". Some of the discourse surrounding this issue has pointed to the historical value in keeping the statues on display. Students could use the internet to research what statues there are. They'd each choose one and do some research on that individual from academic sources, trying to include the individual's thoughts on slavery. They could also research the actual monument and how and when it was erected. Then each student would present their research to the class. Students can read this article for historians take on the issue to get them started: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/15/arts/design/trump-robert-e-lee-george-washington-thomas-jefferson.html?mcubz=0

Racism is a huge topic in our current national discourse. Students can explore the historical significance of race and ask what is the legacy of slavery that remains today?
A great starting off point for everyone could be understanding the platform of the Black Lives Matter movement. Students can evaluate their claims within a historical context.
BLM: http://blacklivesmatter.com/

Students will become experts on the successes and failures of the Articles of Confederation and how those led to the creation of the Constitution. The class can be divided up into groups, each group taking a success of failure of the Articles. They'll need to research what those are and how they affected the ideas that went into the creation of the Constitution and then present their information to the class.
