This book would be a great window and sliding door for all students. Students are taught to know about segregation and Jim Crow laws, but for younger students, learning about the segregation system in South Africa through this book is a useful tool. This book also won a Coretta Scott King Award, and I can agree with its win because Nelson wrote
about a figure that made an impact not only in South Africa,  but the U.S as well. The purpose of not having the title and Nelson’s name on the front of the book is because Nelson Mandela is that recognizable. Nelson takes great use of the gutter to represent division (between America and Germany)  and emotion between each illustration. In a Reading Rockets Interview, Nelson stated that he enjoys illustrating and writing about African
American history and other ethnic groups because we get to read 
about their truths. The close-up images of Henry applies the illustrative element of shape placement and distance.. The close-up picture of Henry helps the reader move into what Henry was thinking (the probability of his children being sold) and feel empathy for what he, and other slaves go through (losing their children and never seeing them again). The illustrations in this book are different compared to the others by Nelson using a darker tone and the illustrations being more realistic. These illustrative elements pull in the reader to understand the difficulties and hope Henry experienced. This book won the Caldecott Award in 2020. Nelson's illustrations in this book are not whitewashed like previous award winners we have studied. Instead, he uses darker shades to depict black Americans and draws them with a darker pigment. The illustrations do a fantastic job of showing the different color spectrum of the African American race, showing that the "blacks" have much more to them than just one color.
