Mama Elena has a tense and rocky relationship with Tita because she limits Tita throughout the book. "The moment they took their first bite of cake everybody was flooded with a great wave of longing" (39.Esquivel) She is a very motherly person, even without a child of her own. This supports the theme of family, and how badly she wants one

When I've imagined her I've pictured very small smile lines and very predominant craws feet on ridges of her high cheekbones. To me, this is how I imagine a stern face, as Tita makes her out to be.
