         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Of the many eruptions of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Vesuvius">Mount Vesuvius</a>, a major <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratovolcano">stratovolcano</a> in southern <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy">Italy</a>, the most famous is its eruption in 79 AD, which was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_volcanic_eruptions_by_death_toll">one of the deadliest</a> in European history.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruption_of_Mount_Vesuvius_in_79_AD#cite_note-BBCportents-3"><sup>[2]</sup></a> It has been called one of the most well-known volcanic eruptions in history.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruption_of_Mount_Vesuvius_in_79_AD#cite_note-4"><sup>[3]</sup></a><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruption_of_Mount_Vesuvius_in_79_AD#cite_note-5"><sup>[4]<br></sup></a><br></div><div><br>In the autumn of 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius violently spewed forth a deadly <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruption_column">cloud</a> of super-heated <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tephra">tephra</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_gas">gases</a> to a height of 33 km (21 mi), ejecting <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lava">molten rock</a>, pulverized <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumice">pumice</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_ash">hot ash</a> at 1.5 million tons per second, ultimately releasing 100,000 times the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_energy">thermal energy</a> of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki">atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki</a>.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruption_of_Mount_Vesuvius_in_79_AD#cite_note-sciencepompeii-6"><sup>[5]</sup></a> The event gives its name to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesuvian_eruption">Vesuvian</a> type of volcanic eruption, characterised by eruption columns of hot gases and ash exploding into the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratosphere">stratosphere</a>, although the event also included <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyroclastic_flow">pyroclastic flows</a> associated with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelean_eruption">Pelean eruptions</a>.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The deadliest earthquake in history hit China's Shaanxi province on Jan. 23, 1556. Known as the "Jiajing Great Earthquake" after the emperor whose reign it occurred in, the temblor reduced a 621-square-mile (1,000 square kilometers) swath of the country to rubble, according to the <a href="http://www.kepu.net.cn/english/quake/ruins/rns03.html">Science Museums of China</a>. An estimated 830,000 people died as their <em>yaodong</em> — cave homes carved into the region's loess plateaus — collapsed. The exact magnitude of the quake is lost to history, but modern-day geophysicists estimate it at around magnitude 8.</div>]]></description>

         <title>San Francisco Earthquake in 1906</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On the morning of April 18, 1906, a massive earthquake shook San Francisco, California. Though the quake lasted less than a minute, its immediate impact was disastrous. The earthquake also ignited several fires around the city that burned for three days and destroyed nearly 500 city blocks.<br><br></div><div>Despite a quick response from San Francisco's large military population, the city was devastated. The earthquake and fires killed an estimated 3,000 people and left half of the city's 400,000 residents homeless. Aid poured in from around the country and the world, but those who survived faced weeks of difficulty and hardship.<br><br></div><div>The survivors slept in tents in city parks and the Presidio, stood in long lines for food, and were required to do their cooking in the street to minimize the threat of additional fires. The San Francisco earthquake is considered one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On August 18, 1931, the Yangtze River in <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/china/china-timeline">China</a> peaks during a horrible flood that kills 3.7 million people directly and indirectly over the next several months. This was perhaps the worst natural disaster of the 20th century.<br><br></div><div><br>The Yangtze River runs through southern China, one of the most populated areas on Earth. The region’s people, most of whom lived at subsistence level, depended on the river for water for their personal and farming needs. In April, the river-basin area received far-above-average rainfall. When torrential rains came again in July, the stage was set for disaster. The Yangtze flooded over a 500-square-mile area. The rising waters drove 500,000 people from their homes by the beginning of August.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On 16 August 2005, an earthquake struck the east coast of the Japanese island of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honsh%C5%AB">Honshū</a> at 11.46 am (02:46 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTC">UTC</a>) on 16 August 2005, causing damage and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_outage">power outages</a>. The event registered 7.2 on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_magnitude_scale">moment magnitude scale</a><br><br>The earthquake occurred on Tuesday, August 16, 2005, and affected Japan's northeastern coast. It triggered a tsunami warning, and buildings shook 200 miles away in the capital, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo">Tokyo</a>. It was initially estimated to have a moment magnitude of 6.8, and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Geological_Survey">United States Geological Survey</a> later declared it as a 7.2.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Miyagi_earthquake#cite_note-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hurricane Ida was the most destructive storm of the 2009 hurricane season contributing to hundreds of deaths in El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Ida is also notable because it was the first November hurricane to make landfall during an El Niño event since 1925. Ida intensified rapidly off the Nicaragua coast to a Category 1 hurricane on November 4<sup>th</sup> in less than 24 hours after the first <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/">National Hurricane Center</a> advisory was issued. This is the second fastest hurricane intensification on record, behind Humberto in 1970 which intensified to hurricane status in less than 18 hours. Ida emerged into the Caribbean and strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on November 8<sup>th</sup>. Ida eventually weakened and made a second landfall as a tropical storm near Dauphin Island, Alabama on November 10<sup>th</sup> making Ida the second latest tropical cyclone to make landfall along the Gulf Coast, trailing only Hurricane Kate in 1985 which made landfall on November 21<sup>st</sup></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<h1><br></h1><div><br>The <strong>2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull</strong> were a period of volcanic events at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyjafjallaj%C3%B6kull">Eyjafjallajökull</a> in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland">Iceland</a> which, although relatively small for volcanic eruptions, caused <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_travel_disruption_after_the_2010_Eyjafjallaj%C3%B6kull_eruption">enormous disruption to air travel</a> across western and northern Europe over an initial period of six days in April 2010. Additional localised disruption continued into May 2010, and eruptive activity persisted until June 2010. The eruption was declared officially over in October 2010, after 3 months of inactivity, when snow on the glacier did not melt. From 14–20 April, ash from the volcanic eruption covered large areas of Northern Europe.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Japan earthquake and tsunami of 2011</strong>, also called <strong>Great Sendai Earthquake</strong> or <strong>Great Tōhoku Earthquake</strong>, severe natural disaster that occurred in northeastern <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Japan">Japan</a> on March 11, 2011. The event began with a powerful <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/earthquake-geology">earthquake</a> off the northeastern <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/coast">coast</a> of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Honshu">Honshu</a>, Japan’s main island, which caused <a href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/widespread">widespread</a> damage on land and initiated a series of large <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/tsunami">tsunami</a> waves that devastated many coastal areas of the country, most notably in the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Tohoku">Tōhoku</a> region (northeastern Honshu). The tsunami also instigated a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Fukushima-accident">major nuclear accident</a> at a power station along the coast.<br><br>The magnitude-9.0 earthquake struck at 2:46 PM. (The early estimate of magnitude 8.9 was later revised upward.) The <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/epicentre">epicentre</a> was located some 80 miles (130 km) east of the city of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Sendai-Miyagi-prefecture-Japan">Sendai</a>, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Miyagi">Miyagi</a> prefecture, and the focus occurred at a depth of 18.6 miles (about 30 km) below the floor of the western <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Pacific-Ocean">Pacific Ocean</a>. The earthquake was caused by the rupture of a stretch of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/subduction-zone">subduction zone</a> associated with the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Japan-Trench">Japan Trench</a>, which separates the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/Eurasian-Plate">Eurasian Plate</a> from the subducting <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/Pacific-Plate">Pacific Plate</a>. (Some geologists argue that this portion of the Eurasian Plate is actually a fragment of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/North-American-Plate">North American Plate</a> called the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Okhotsk-microplate">Okhotsk microplate</a>.) A part of the subduction zone measuring approximately 190 miles (300 km) long by 95 miles (150 km) wide lurched as much as 164 feet (50 metres) to the east-southeast and thrust upward about 33 feet (10 metres). The March 11 temblor was felt as far away as <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky">Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky</a>, Russia; <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Kao-hsiung-Taiwan">Kao-hsiung</a>, Taiwan; and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Beijing">Beijing</a>, China. It was preceded by several foreshocks, including a magnitude-7.2 event centred approximately 25 miles (40 km) away from the epicentre of the main quake. Hundreds of aftershocks, dozens of magnitude 6.0 or greater and two of magnitude 7.0 or greater, followed in the days and weeks after the main quake. (Nearly two years later, on December 7, 2012, a magnitude-7.3 tremor originated from the same plate boundary region. The quake caused no injuries and little damage.) The March 11, 2011, earthquake was the strongest to strike the region since the beginning of record keeping in the late 19th century, and it is considered one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded. It was later reported that a satellite orbiting at the outer edge of Earth’s atmosphere that day had detected <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/infrasonics">infrasonics</a> (very low-frequency sound waves) from the quake.<br><br></div><div><br></div><div><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Hurricane Eta in 2020</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><br>Hurricane Eta</strong> was a deadly and erratic <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saffir-Simpson_scale">Category 4 hurricane</a> that devastated parts of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_America">Central America</a> in early November 2020. The record-tying twenty-eighth <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_cyclone_naming">named storm</a>, thirteenth <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane">hurricane</a>, and sixth major hurricane of the extremely-active <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Atlantic_hurricane_season">2020 Atlantic hurricane season</a>, Eta originated from a vigorous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_wave">tropical wave</a> in the eastern <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean_Sea">Caribbean Sea</a> on October 31. The system rapidly organized as it progressed west, with the cyclone ultimately becoming a Category 4 hurricane on November 3. With a peak intensity of 150 mph (240 km/h) and 922 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mbar">mbar</a> (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HPa">hPa</a>; 27.23 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InHg">inHg</a>), it was the third most intense November <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_hurricane">Atlantic hurricane</a> on record, behind the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1932_Cuba_hurricane">1932 Cuba hurricane</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Iota">Hurricane Iota</a>, the latter of which formed just two weeks later. Some weakening took place as the system made <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landfall">landfall</a> near <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Cabezas,_Nicaragua">Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua</a>, late that same day. Eta rapidly weakened to a tropical depression and briefly degenerated to a remnant low as it meandered across Central America for two days, before regenerating into a tropical depression and moving north over water. The storm later reorganized over the Caribbean as it accelerated toward <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuba">Cuba</a> on November 7, making a second landfall on the next day. Over the next five days, the system moved erratically, making a third landfall in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Keys">Florida Keys</a>, on November 9, before slowing down and making a counterclockwise loop in the southern <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Mexico">Gulf of Mexico</a>, just off the coast of Cuba, with the storm's intensity fluctuating along the way. After briefly regaining hurricane strength on November 11, the system weakened back to a tropical storm once more, before making a fourth landfall on Florida on the next day, and proceeding to accelerate northeastward. Eta subsequently became <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extratropical_cyclone">extratropical</a> on November 13, before dissipating off the coast of the Eastern United States on the next day.<br><br></div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>
