We had students from almost 60 countries attending. I ran a workshop titled "Understanding Cultures". We got the participants to pair up with another participant who came from a place that had difficult relations with their own country. The discussed stereotypes, prejudices and hate speech that they commonly see in their own home targeted at their partner's country. The students had to interview the senior citizens in their communities and to describe and reflect on an experience using DEAL. Prior S-L, the students' perception of senior citizens is that they are often inactive and sickly. However, after the S-L experience, not only that their misconception was corrected, some of the students reflected that the senior citizens were mentally and physically stronger than them. I even know of a few students since then have volunteered in senior citizens corner. The instructor assigned each of us an emotion (e.g. heartbreak) and made us trawl through our memory for a corresponding incident that most triggered that emotion.
