A couple of years ago my family and I marched in Salt Lake City, Utah. We were marching and advocating to have more gun regulations. A lot of people joined the movement, yet there were also people that held signs fighting for less gun regulation to the sides. When we got to the capitol building in downtown people shared their stories and their fears. We all gathered there in protest advocating for peace.

In the 2017-2018 school year, I participated in the Red for Ed protests for higher pay for teachers and better funding for education. By doing this, I stood out in streets getting the attention of drivers for the cause. While doing this fellow protestors and I were verbal harassed and flipped off for supporting this cause. Despite this, I was proud to be apart of the movement. A question I would like to pose is "Is getting a negative response just as good as a positive one, especially in context of protests?"--Luis G.

I remember seeing the news that day. My parents always had the national news on at dinner, and that night the breaking story was the Parkland shooting. I remember just feeling so upset and angry at that time, honestly, I couldn't believe that it had happened. Even though I was still only in middle school I wanted to do something. Later that week, a couple of kids planned a walkout to show solidarity with those students and to help show our opinion on gun violence. So on that Friday about 200 of us walked out and stood in silence. This connects to today because I saw something that happened and turned around and took action in the form of a protest.

A time that I took action was during this past election. This was more political action. I had made sure that I did research on both sides, both parties, that were running in order to not be biased in the election. To be able to be knowledgeable and well rounded in the entirety of the outlooks, motives, and actions. I then was able to also share this information with my friends around me and spark good conversation. I feel as though the political world is becoming more and more divided when it does not need to be in all subjects. I believe that we can see the differences in others and still come together as a community and nation through differences and perspective.

My high school's dress code, like many schools across the nation, targeted women, claiming that exposure of certain areas of skin was inappropriate for school settings. As a male student, I took part in an anti-dress code movement, which called for our school to stop sexualizing its female students and allow a more inclusive and realistic dress code. A group of female students in my district started a petition, and arranged a "protest", where students wore clothing articles that were outlawed by the school's dress code. Many students across the district, regardless of gender, joined in on the wearing of crop tops, shorter skirts, jeans with rips, and any other things that girls have been shamed for wearing at our school.

In a class that I am taking, we are looking into the equality of all students, and how different factors play a part into the inequality of a lot of students. We have been able to use these issues of discussion and start conversations with higher power about these issues more locally, in effort to start some sort of chain reaction of action. A question I have to ignite some more thoughts and questions for others is, will there ever be in a time in society where education for students is equal, or is there always going to be some sort of inequality that may be hiding and affecting specific students?

I appreciated this quote because I think that a lot of movements look back on the past with criticism and anger, but try to disregard the past by creating a future that is just. If our society lets history drag us backwards there wouldn't be progress- instead this quote advises us to move towards our goal regardless of what was out of our control. I have related to this idea through various marches I've participated in, regarding BLM, LGBTQ+ freedoms, and women's autonomy. During these events, there is little talk about the past, all energies are put towards future change. Sadie Beebe

Before that I never worked out at all and I knew it was going to be hard since its a 60 min class in a 90-100 degree room. Now I am doing it about 4 times a week which I'm very proud of. Its not the easiest workout and it has had a good impact on my body now I'm more flexible and have more strength. I would've never thought that I would be able to these workouts but I can get through a whole class in perfectly.

One day after work, I was pleasantly surprised when a good friend asked me to attend a pride march. This request was given with merely an hours notice, but I attended anyways. It was great meeting new people and being a part of a new community. This also made me ask, how can we measure the impact this has on the community?

I was a very difficult time trying to transition from in person to online, especially as an individual heavily involved in student government. My school district constructed a task force of members in our community, this included educators, students, parents, physicians, etc. The goal of this task force was to figure how the community can support students in this new era of learning. It was asked that a few students from each school would attend weekly meetings to discuss the needs of students in the community. I took action to be one of the several students on this task force. I spoke up about the possible needs of students as they tackle online learning.

In doing that we organized donations from the community and the managers assigned pricing. So that way victims of sexual assault and the unhoused can have access to those resources for relatively cheaper. We also promoted and advertised the event and brought awareness. Some questions to help us think further about these ideas would be: How can we better improve the lives of those in need? How can we inspire the need for change in our communities? - B.G.

This was our way of making our voices heard and showing how many people supported the movement and wanted to see change. This March reminds me of the LA riots because while there was no violence or destruction in our school march, it was a large gathering of people who all stood for the same thing coming together to let their voices be heard much more powerfully then had they protested individually. -JPW

In 2020 my hometown was experiencing a stretch where gun violence was taking a lot of lives. Including my best friend. The town got sick of it and decided to take action having multiple parades and making the news state wide. soon a lot of news channels were also in the parades interviewing people and well I think everyone including me were just trying to put some pressure on authorities by making a lot of noise. This worked and eventually the criminals were all caught and while that wont bring the people we lost it certainly makes the community a lot more calm knowing that the people responsible are locked up and facing the consequence of their actions. Before this I did not really understand why people did all the parades and everything. But after experiencing everything that happened and seeing that it really does make a difference to stand up and make noise. My whole mentality has changed. And now I encourage everyone to speak up and don't let things get forgotten because of fear or because you think no one will listen.

This was the summer before my junior year of high school where I spent 2 weeks in the D.R. exploring and doing volunteer work to improve the community. My favorite project we worked on was refurbishing a local basketball court, which was in such bad shape it was impossible to use. Our volunteer group of 19 teens from all over the U.S. helped lay and repave new concrete, painted court lines, and constructed a new hoop with a fresh rim/net. After a few days of hard work, we played basketball with the children of the community and it was so rewarding to see the excitement and joy on their faces as we broke in the brand new court.
The first question I have to further these ideas would be: What public spaces and facilities have we grown up with that communities in poverty might not have the luxury of accessing?
A follow up question to this is: How could we inspire these communities to create more of these public spaces and take action in developing more places for people to enjoy these kinds of experiences?

- Logan McLaughlin

I donate blood every chance I get (every 56 days). My goals are to consistently feel happy about giving something that I believe to be more meaningful than money. It is a consistently rewarding experience and I even consider it to be a form of self-expression for me. This is a small think and certainly doesn't save many lives but I I'll give it every time. This a small deed that doesn't take many goals, beliefs, or actions. It does, however, take courage and a willing person to sacrifice some part of them for a cause that may save a life.

A time where I took action was when I was playing baseball I had to step up and be a leader. This showed me the correct ways to be a leader which I am very fortunate of. This was very interesting to me at the time because I needed to be leading my teammates to victory. This is something that I have been good at before but this was the biggest of them all. I had to lead my team from down 5 runs to come back and win. This has taught me how to be a leader on and off the field which has really helped me lead now.

One the consistent actions I have been doing for the better part of the past decade has been cooking for the Ronald McDonald kids on the weekends. The Ronald McDonald house is a house on campus of Phoenix Children's hospital and houses the kids that stay long team at the hospital due to sickness, leases or anything they are fighting. I love to connect and cook food for these kids and it is a form of self-expression. It put into perspective how lucky I was to be born healthy and active and how important taking care of my health is. I love giving back and showing these kids love through games, conversations and food.

I also had to be a leader to the girls. I looked out for them and had to make sure they were doing they're part on the team. There so much extra resposibilty that came with being the captain. A question I always asked myself was how can I be the best influence on these girls when I also want to live out my life?

A very important time in my life where I took action was when one of my very close friends was diagnosed with stage 4 Sarcoma cancer at the age of 20. She was diagnosed back in June and immediately, my hometown friends and I all took action to raise money towards her research and medical bills. We put together a 5k run where we all wore the color yellow to support Kate and raise money and awareness for her. Her family put together a Caringbridge website for Kate, which is basically a site dedicated to helping family and friends communicate with and support their loved ones during their journey. I'm going to share her website below for anyone interested in reading more about her story!

A time I took action that not only affected me but affected my family and his friends was my senior year of high school when my little brother was being bullied publicly online. A close friend of mine sent me a photo of an instagram account someone had created to anonymously share secrets or false information about someone and the person who ran the instagram account would post it for everyone in the school to see. There were then specific people mentioned multiple times and they had their own highlights on the instagram, my brother being on of them. I immediately went to the dean and principle and called my mom and did some digging and eventually found out who the person running the instagram account was because they made they account with their school email on school wifi. The account was shut down and the person who created the account was suspended.

In high school as a graduation requirement we had to achieve 100 community service hours by the time we graduated. It seemed like something to dread at first, but quickly turned into something I became very passionate for. I finished high school with almost 500 hours and most of it was spending it with kids and teaching them how to play sports. It is an experience that I am very proud of that I was able to teach the next generation about something I love and am passionate for.

I resonate deeply with the quote, "Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world." This reminds me of my involvement in my fraternity's philanthropic event supporting the Friends of PACC foundation for the Pima County Animal Shelter. Each small donation from our fraternity members and the broader community contributed to a significant impact. It showcased the power of collective action, emphasizing that even seemingly modest efforts, when united, can create meaningful change. It's a testament to the idea that every individual plays a vital role in shaping a better world.

Reflecting on the #TransitTogether campaign I initiated on Instagram, I'm reminded of the potential ripple effect of personal actions. By sharing my commitment to sustainable commuting, I not only encouraged others to consider public transportation but also fostered a sense of community around this shared ethos. It wasn't just about my individual choice; it was about sparking a collective movement toward more sustainable living. This experience has made me ponder how personal actions, even as simple as choosing eco-friendly transportation, can influence broader societal perceptions and behaviors.

During high school i was a part of a photography campaign. I was the leader of the group in charge of overseeing that all went well. It was called the von wang challenge which was made after the photographer/artist von want. He makes and takes pictures of pieces that often highlight things that need to be changes like the amount of waist in bodies of water.

Our campaign was about mental health and spreading awareness on topics associating all along those lines. We pushed for new resources to be available to students, staff, etc. which are fortunately still accessible.
