These lyrics originally were from a poem that Axl rose was working on for his girlfriend who was muncher younger than him and developed it into a song, Axl then married her and divorced her a month later
The song revealed a sensitive side that Axl Rose hadn't shown before and has done so sporadically since: "A lot of rock bands are too wimpy to have any sentiment or any emotion in any of their stuff unless they are in pain," said Rose at the time. "Sweet Child O' Mine is the first positive love song I've ever written, but I never had anyone to write anything about before." This song is the most covered song that guns N' roses released. 

To me, this song is personally about the loss of someone and remembering them. The first verse really speaks to me as an acoustic cover of this song was played at my best friends funeral and the wording really makes me think of them. 
"Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place" This song was played over pictures of my friend, so whenever I saw him smile or just saw his face I was with him for a little while, whenever I see the pictures memories come back to when we went to school together and how much he meant to me and our friendship group. (Below is the video that was played at his funeral with the song over it.)
