         <title>Short Biography</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Tracy K. Smith was born on April 16, 1972 in Massachusetts, although she was raised in northern California. Smith mother was a teacher while her father was a engineer. In elementary school Smith became interested in poetry and started reading and writing poems. Her favorite poets were Mark Twain and Emily Dickinson. During her time in Harvard UNiversity she earned a BA. At Columbia University Smith earned a MFA in creative writing. Smith has written four books of poetry, winning the Cave Canem prize, James Laughlin Award and the Essense Literary Award, and Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Then in 2014 she was awarded the Academy of American Poets fellowship. Currently Smith teaches creative writing at Princeton University. She also hosts American Public Media's radio program and podcast <a href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/foundation/press/148034/us-poet-laureate-brings-poetry-to-the-masses-with-the-slowdown"><em>The Slowdown</em></a>. Smith also currently serves as the 22nd <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poet_laureate_of_the_United_States">Poet Laureate of the United States</a>. Tracy K.
