with the rise of pro and anti slavery movements there were many violent outbreaks and fights by people who wanted to abolish slavery and by people who wanted to keep slavery. some politicians were able to use these to aid them in being elected. there were many murders in Kansas, pro-slavery raiders attacked Lawerence. abolitionist John brown retaliated and killed several pro-slavery Kansans in retribution. violence spiked as people separated and joined the different parties. many outbreaks of violent protesting and fights broke out during this time war broke out because of these two political groups many were killed in response to the political policies each party had.

https://www.americanyawp.com/text/13-the-sectional-crisis/

Tyler Cortez

This topic was applicable in 1854 with vote fraud, in Kansas, and goes all the way until 1859. It happened when Kansas was trying to become an anti-slave state by using politics and voting to become an anti-slave state. Instead, the federal government didn't think twice about looking at their votes and instead recognized them as slave states causing Kansas as a whole to become secede from the south to become a part of the Union. The Missourians had a play in this votes fraud with Kansas as they crosses Kansas's borders, so they can mess with their votes so they can be a slave state just like Missouri. With this, the voting wasn't fair for Kansas, and Kansas even called out the Pierce administration because the voting wasn't fair for Kansas. After that, the federal government didn't recognize the votes of Kansas and considered them a slave state instead because of that Kansas had become the first state to show what the sectional crisis looked like. John Brown also had a play in the sectional crisis Bleeding Kansas he would murder all of the pro-slavery people that would go into Kansas because he wanted Kansas to be an anti-slave state. John Brown started a raid on October 16-18 which was stopped by General Robert. E. Lee caused many of Brown's men to be killed in action including his sons, but John Brown was imprisoned by the General's men until he was executed not too long after by Robert E. Lee's men.

The American Yawp- 13 The Sectional Crisis https://www.americanyawp.com/text/13-the-sectional-crisis/

Bleeding Kansas Image-https://www.haikudeck.com/bleeding-kansas-education-presentation-NySEORlcG2#slide0

Javier De La Garza

How did the experiences of the pre-war and Civil War era continue to shape those involved? What were the legacies of these conflicts?

The experience of the pre war and civil was continue to shape affected those involved in bleeding Kansas because there was two different size the pro slavery and the ani slavery. Between the year 1854 and 1861 there was a mini civil war that happened because of the Nebraska act which passed in May of 1854 when Kansas Nebraska act allowed slavery to spread into western territories based on the idea of popular sovereignty that people could vote in those territories when they applied for statehood whether or not they want to be slave.
In 1855 Kansas was ready to vote for a territorial legislature the first step to get statehood. This legislature would dictate whether this was really a free state or a slave state. Kansas was a state in favor of being a free state but people from Missouri cross the border and take over the voting number outnumbering the anti slavery people and that’s when the bleed Kansas a mini civil was started. In the end of this story slavery still continued but the north and south still almost decided the whole state.

The central Groups /individuals involved were three different political groups Free Staters, Abolitionists, and pro-slavery. These groups took place after The Kansas Nebraska Act which put boundaries between Kansas and Nebraska. After this act Kansas used popular sovereignty to determine if the state was going to be a free state or a slave one, but this comes with a vote fraud making Kansas an slave state. This fraud created war between the two political groups. John Brown an abolitionist marched with seven men and four of those men were John Brown's sons, in order to confront pro-slavery settlers, they ended up killing five men. This was a response to the fight on Lawrence between anti, and pro slavery parties.

https://www.americanyawp.com/text/13-the-sectional-crisis/#IV_Free_Soil_Free_Labor_Free_Men

http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/disp_textbook.cfm?smtID=3&psid=330

Luis Aldape
