05.11.2022 Translating columns of text prepared in Microsoft Excel using MemoQ

I wanted to find out how to translate columns of text prepared in Microsoft Excel using MemoQ. I found an useful information in one of the MemoQ tutorials on YouTube. I imagined that I have received a file for translation from a client which asked me to make the Polish translation. I prepared an excel file which contains 4 languages: English, Polish, Russian and Spanish. The English information is complete, but the other languages have a missing translations that need to be filled in.

Because this is a Microsoft excel file, the default filter selected by MemoQ is Microsoft Excel. I had to change it to the Multilingual delimited text filter. The next step was to change filter and configuration. I could indicate exactly which columns are to be important for the translation.

In the translation project sentences that have already been translated are locked and confirmed – this way I will avoid accidental changes to the finished translation. According to my changes in settings the Russian translation has been imported down below in „context”. I understand Russian and I can use this information as hints to help me in my translation. There is no Spanish translation, because I fixed it in settings.

I have gained basic knowledge about translating this kind of text and I think that I will be able to make such translations in the future using MemoQ program.

20.12.2022 How to export the contents of translation memory from memoQ to Trados Studio?

Translation memories have three possible formats in Trados – TMW and TXT, which cannot be processed by memoQ, and TMX, which can be made compatible with memoQ translation memories. The export feature allows to export contents of a translation memory to a TMX file.

Importing into a translation memory enables to load data from previous translations into a new translation memory. This allows to exchange translation memory data between different participants in the translation.

To learn how to export and import TM data from memoQ to Trados Studio I watched a tutorial on YouTube. I created a sample file containing source text that I will translate using these two programs.

If we go to memoQ and find translation memories we use, we can export translation memory by right-clicking on this translation memory and then selecting Export to TMX. The program will generate a translation memory exchange file that can be used in Trados Studio.

Then go to Trados Studio.

We can click on settings panel and then find a TM we use. There will be an option of importing files. There we can import our translation memory exchange file from memoQ.

I have managed to export a TMX file from memoQ and import it to Trados Studio and copy the translation from one program to another using translation memory.

08.01.2023 Neural Machine Translation in Trados Studio

I wanted to find out how to connect Language Weaver (NMT platform) while working in Trados Studio. In order to do so I watched tutorial on YouTube and looked for information in some Trados Studio guides. Unfortunately, I am using a trial version of Trados Studio 2022 desktop application. It does not include access to cloud capabilities. This trial does not include access to some products and services such as machine translation from Language Weaver or MultiTerm. However, I am going to work for a translation agency in the near future and I want to know Trados Studio’s the most useful functions. The majority of translation agencies provide translators with Trados Studio for the duration of completing a translation and require them to be able to use this software.

Language Weaver (NMT platform) is accessible for all Trados users, available in over 3,000 neural language combinations, and provides high quality, instant translation results.

To access Language Weaver in Trados Studio, firstly, I need to log in into my cloud account. Adding Language Weaver is possible during a project creation or by accesing project settings. The machine translation provider I will add in the same place where we are adding Translation Memories to our projects. I have to select Add and then Cloud-based resources. In the pop-up window there will be an information about my language pair which program will automatically recognize and that I am connected to NMT Model. Then I need to select Save button to add neural machine translation to my project. Once added, a Cloud-based resources will appear in my list of resources. By clicking on segments I will be provided with automatic machine translation results for whole segments which I can post edit if necessary. This is indicated with NMT icon which appears in column between segments.

There is a possibility to turn suggestions from machine translation off. To stop whole segments being translated I need to change settings (options → editor → automation) and untick Apply automated translation when no TM match is found.

I have also wondered if is it possible to pre-translate whole segments using machine translation as we do it with Translation Memory. We do it in the same way as in case of pre-translating texts by using TMs: Batch tasks → Pre-translate Files and in the settings window the Apply automated translation option need to be selected.

I think I have gained enough knowledge about the machine translation used in Trados Studio and will certainly use it in the future.

Links for Trados Studio' video tutorials and guides which I have used:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhP-Q1m9gyk
https://www.trados.com/products/machine-translation/access-nmt-in-studio.html
https://www.trados.com/products/machine-translation/

08.01.23 Using SDL Studio packages in memoQ

In the CAT tools class, each of us created a project package file in Trados Studio, and then we exchanged them. We were asked to open a package file in Trados Studio on our computers, make changes and create a return package to send back. I wanted to learn how to open a package file created in Trados Studio in memoQ, edit it and then create a return package. For this purpose, I decided to get information from the website: https://helpcenter.memoq.com/hc/en-us.

In memoQ, you can import in SDL Studio created packages. This feature is useful when, for example, a project manager wants to hand over a project from Trados so that the translator can do the translation in memoQ. SDLPPX files contain an XML file describing the project, the documents for translation in SDLXLIFF format, the translation memories and term base. If you don't need them – because you have better translation memories and term bases on your computer – just change the settings when importing the file. From an SDL Studio package, we can create a local project as well as an online project. When the translation is finished, you need to export a return package.

24.01.2023 A beginner-friendly subtitle editor – Subtitle Edit

Subtitle Edit is a free subtitle editor that you can use to create, alter, and save video subtitles. You can use it to view videos and change the timestamp of subtitles to make sure everything is in sync. Subtitle Edit also lets you open and save files in various formats, for example SRT and VTT.
How do I edit subtitles?
After downloading and setting up the Subtitle Edit tool on my Windows PC, I came across an application interface that seemed complicated at first. However, once I started using the programme, I found that it was very well organised. To edit subtitles, all you have to do is upload the text file and start editing it from the main window. Subtitle Edit software is suitable for editing texts in different languages with the help of Google’s translate tool. This feature is also useful when you want to search part of a missing subtitle text.
Other useful programme features:
- Audio to text (speech recognition) via Vosk/Kaldi;
- Can read and write both UTF-8 and other unicode files and ANSI (support for all languages/encodings on the pc!)
- Remove text for hear impaired (HI);
- Merge short lines/split long lines;
- Spell checking via Libre Office dictionaries (many dictionaries available).

In the video, I show how I adjust the length of the individual subtitles to match the speech rate of the speaker in the video.

I watched a few videos about installing and using Subtitle Edit. Here are links to the videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJvUnx9LEqc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7mMo_QycXY
