How do developmental scientists study people? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each research method?
A: They observe groups of people of the same age range doing the same thing in similar environments. The scientist makes an observation. They have a hypothesis and they test and review the data. Developmental scientists are using the scientific method. Following the experiment other scientists can perform the same test. Some of the disadvantages are that assumptions can be allowed because its a social thing and people aren't always straight forward in why they do things. The advantage is it is still done in a systematic repeatable experiment that allows a large amount of data to come to light.

What ethical problems may arise in research in humans?
A: Assumptions and inferences have to be allowed and this may skew data and findings. Ethical issues on what can be done to a person or a child is an obvious ethical dilemma. Testing things that may cause physical, mental or emotional harm or lasting damage would be one example.
-Liela Brown-

What purpose do theories serve?
A: They help give possible answers to the questions of why something occurs. Until definitive facts about something are discovered theories give a framework of the reasoning for the actions that occur. In developmental psychology such theories function as observations as a person grows.

What are two theoretical issues on which developmental scientists differ?
A:Cross-sectional: comparing and contrasting different age groups to find the difference in each age group.
Longitudinal: repeated examination of the same group over a period of time.
These are two different groupings in which the same social tests can be performed.
-Liela Brown-
