"To Believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you i your private heart is true for all men,-that is genius" (Emerson 1).
In this quote Emerson is saying that believing and having your own though make one person truly smart and intelligent. Thinking gives one power. The first paragraph has the same message as this quote. It is talking about speaking your mind and doing what you believe in. This is relating to the title because to be a successful person one must rely on themselves.

"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to hi, but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till" (Emerson 2).
This quote says stop complaining and being jealous and do something about it. You can't afford corn, Emerson says grow it. That quote opened the paragraph and it continues a similar message. The power is in the persona and they have the ability to choose whether to succeed to fall into a pit of despair. Doing something just to do it is not enough, there must be a reason that is going to make this person happy in order to do it correctly.

"A man is to carry himself in the presence of all opposition as if every thing were titular and ephemeral but he" (Emerson 7).
This quote is saying that one should carry themselves as they are being watched and as if those who observe him are all mighty. The paragraph is describing interactions of man vs man and how it can shape a person. It also says the well-spoken are more influential than those who speak the truth. It also discusses the abolition debate and how to argue the issue in a convincing manner.

"What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think "(Emerson 9).
This quote is stressing the notion that who cares what others think, do what is right, not what is popular. The paragraph continues to stress this by detailing how people must break the idea of conformity and do what is morally just. It discusses how those who think individually are smarter which relates and is similar to the original quote pulled.

"For non-conformity the world whips you with its displeasure. And therefore a man must know how to estimate a sour face" (Emerson 11).
The quote is stating that society as a whole does not like opinions that differ from their so those who think differently must realize if their opinion is offending another person. The paragraph continues with this and goes on to describe reactions toward non-conformists. There is rage and anger, but the non-conformist will not be silenced.

"What makes the majesty of heroes of the senate and the field, which so fills the imagination?" (Emerson 16).
Emerson is asking what makes a great senator whose legacy is fondly remembered and whether those who think they are heroes are delusional. The paragraph is looking at heroes like William Pitt, Washington and John Adams. Pitt was originally a hero, but ended up causing the revolution. Washington owned slaves and Adams failed us after we elected him. Believing our heroes are not actually heroes is something for the non-conformist.

Man does not stand in awe of man, nor is the soul admonished to stay at home, to put itself in communication with the internal ocean, but it goes abroad to beg a cup of water of the urns of men" (Emerson 29).
Emerson calls society in the rule of mob and it must suffer humiliation because of its failure. This paragraph discusses how all men have the same blood and race is not a factor in this. He subtly makes the argument for equality for all men is this paragraph. It also says the Emerson will not be silenced and he will voice his message to all.

"Insist in yourself; never imitate. Your own gift can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation; but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession" (Emerson 43).
This message has two parts and both equally important. This first is his usual message of do not conform and do things yourself and it is achievable because a person has the gift to be able to achieve their goals. Emerson's second message is if a person is self-reliant in all aspects, but they own slaves to do labor, they are not actually self-reliant. The paragraph strays from this message by discussing great writers and how it is impossible to imitate greatness. This continues the do not imitate message, but loses the underlying abolition sentiment that is crucial.

"So use all that is called Fortune. Most men gamble with her, and gain all, and lose all, as her wheel rolls. But do thou leave as unlawful these winnings, deal with Cause and Effect the chancellors of God" (Emerson 50).
Emerson is nearing conclusion with this quote and it says that if you are forunate enough to have fortune do not waste it. Use it for good and not just to gamble or for only pleasure. If one has the fortune, one should spread it. This quote is similar to the eventual societal belief of the "gospel wealth." Money should be used to help the less fortunate and it is also a christian duty to do such. That is how Emerson concludes his paper, which is by say spread the wealth because God is watching and he sees everything. God will not show mercy for those who have done wrong. The only good is having good morals and enforcing them, which is Emerson's goal of the entire paper.
