The lesson of the hangman relates to genocide with the hangman being the perpetrator of genocide, and everyone else being the witnesses. It just started off as discrimination, so not many found an issue with it, but as persecution increased, people didn’t speak up against it. This is seen in genocide when people refuse to speak up against persecution because they are either scared of being killed themselves, they don’t believe they can change anything so why try, or they simply don’t care for the matter since it doesn’t directly affect them.

[In the film, People would watch as each person would be a victim of the hangman (genocide) and they would do nothing about it. At the end when the main person became the next victim, there was noone left to save him] The moral of the story is that we are all responsible when it comes to preventing/stopping issues such as genocide. We cannot keep pushing it off just because it is not affecting us directly. If no one takes responsibility, then genocide will keep occurring.

The Hangman relates to genocide because when people witness genocide occurring they typically sit back unless it directly impacts their own life. When the leader tells who will be affected only those affected will act against such atrocities. When the leader changes the overall plan and it affects more people, one comes to realize they have no one to protect them now. Overall, the individual comes to realize they should’ve stood up against such acts because now it is affecting them individually.

The lesson of hangman shows that bystanders who do nothing to speak or simply watch are contributing to the genocide. Bystanders just watch and don’t stand up they can be next victims. This is similar to the quote “First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.” (MARTIN NIEMÖLLER).

People are less likely to act against genocide if they are not affected by it. This can be seen in the hangman when the hangman says to the narrator his cowardly hope allowed the hangman to carry out his act, which is similar to how leaders carry out genocide. The leaders pray on the weakness of the citizens.

The lesson of the hangman relates to genocide because people just stood by and watched the atrocity occur, instead of doing something. When the genocide comes to them, there is nobody to help them and they perish like the others. The hangman represents a perpetrator of a genocide because he “only did as much as they let him”. He also represents a growth of power, because once they reach a certain point, they can't do anything to stop it.

The hangman relates to genocides because no one says or does anything in the prevention, or elimination of genocides. More people end up dying because of this, but for those who do speak up are dealt with /taken out. The hangman would also refer to people as aliens and base his hangings off of that. Much like in genocides where the offender of the crime would alienate specific groups and begin their extermination process off of that.
