Harriet Beecher Stowe's most famous work was called "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Beecher Stowe used this book as a way to tell the truth around slavery. She knew that one of the challenges the slaves faced in gaining their freedom was reaching a mass audience since it was illegal for them to learn to read and write. She took this upon herself in writing "Uncle Tom's Cabin," which told the story of a young slave named Tom and the mistreatment and suffering he endured from his master.

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" gave white slave owners or those that were moderate on the abolition of slavery a way to understand the humanity of slaves, as many saw slaves as a type of work animal. Beecher Stowe was one of the first to use her sympathy for slaves to try to show others why slavery was unjust. The book became a catalyst for many to begin to speak out against slavery and support its abolition.
