Socioeconomic Status

he diversity aspect that had the biggest impact on who I have become would be my socioeconomic status. During my childhood, my family did not have very much money, in fact, most of the time there was not even enough money for necessities. When I say that we did not have enough money for necessities most people may think this just refers to possibly a food shortage or having to use hand-me-downs, but unfortunately that was not the case. There were several times during my childhood that we went without power, heat, gas and of course food. This had the biggest impact on me as it has pushed me to ensure that my children do not have the same experiences that I had during my adolescence.

Emancipation

At the age of 16 I made the decision to file for emancipation. For those who may not be familiar with the term it essentially means being legally declared an adult before the age of 18. I made this decision as unfortunately both of my parents were addicted to drugs, as was my older sister. This caused me to have to work 3 jobs at 16 and pay all of the bills for my entire family. This gave me the necessary push to ensure that I was only responsible for myself. After several months of court proceedings and filings I was granted my request for emancipation. (Just as an FYI it really doesn't mean much for Utah)

YWCA

During my freshman year of high school we had an incident that forced us to become occupants of the YWCA. We lived at the shelter for about 6 months before being able to move into the permanent housing they called KRH (this is an apartment building behind the YWCA for women and their children). This experience provided me a new light into how women and children should realistically be treated, as prior to this I had a very distorted vision of what was acceptable. This experience allowed me to find a husband who did not have the same traits and personality that my father did and to teach my three wonderful girls how everyone deserves to be treated.

I have been working in the foreclosure mortgage industry for the last 11 years. Prior to starting this profession I had a very optimistic view of all people and wanted to believe the best. However, after working in this industry I have become more and more realistic about my expectations of society. Although people say that millennials have a very entitled sense I am here to tell you that is not the case. I have experienced more people from the older generation or "Gen-X" that believe they have been wronged and deserve everything to be handed to them. My view on the society has become slightly bleak and my request to society is to try to make the best of the situation and only ask for assistance if it is really needed, when you ask for assistance that you don't need it takes it away from those who actually do.

Being a mother/step mother to three amazing girls has changed everything in my life. My daughters are the light of my life and dictate everything I do in life. I have had to learn to build a working relationship with my step daughters mother even when she was unwilling in order to put her best interests first. I have had to learn patience with my children that in all honesty I didn't have before and is still a work in progress. It has also taught me how to set the best example possible for my girls and teaching them how to provide service to the community and help those in need whether they have requested it or if you have just seen it. Being a mother is the most rewarding experience and job that I have and will ever have.
