Eligibility and Selection Criteria

• The Cambridge Higher Aspirations Scheme (CHAS) is run by Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge and is open to Year 12 students who attend state schools or colleges.

• Applicants to the programme must be on course to achieve 3As or higher at A level (or equivalent). The programme is selective, and we will operate a holistic approach in assessing applications, considering students’ prior academic attainment and predicted A Level (or equivalent) grades alongside widening participation criteria.

• Applicants should ensure that the combination of A Level (or equivalent qualification) subjects that they are currently taking meets the subject entry requirements for the University of Cambridge degree which corresponds to their chosen CHAS course. For example, students applying for the Economics CHAS programme must be taking A Level Mathematics. Students will participate in 5 supervisions (Cambridge style small group teaching) led by a researcher from the University:

Applications are now open for the UCL Target Medicine Mentor Scheme!

The UCL Target Medicine Mentor Scheme is a free year long programme for Year 12 students in and around Greater London from underrepresented backgrounds with the potential and desire to go to Medical School. Successful applicants will be paired with a current UCL Medical Student who will act as their mentor for an entire calendar year, from January to December 2026. The programme is made up of seven face-to-face mentoring sessions, regular contact with a mentor using the Brightside online mentoring platform, and a series of additional information, advice and guidance events. The schedule includes practice and advice in various areas including work experience, the UCAT, personal statements and mock interviews. The comprehensive 18-month programme will develop skills, confidence and experience around the application process, as well as provide unrivalled insight into the RVC’s academic, teaching and pastoral offerings. Throughout this sustained, supported engagement, we will host a multitude of on campus events, further supported by occasional online and off-campus opportunities. Scholars will have the opportunity to engage with a series of expert lectures, practical teaching, group work, animal handling, an admissions masterclass and a zoo field trip, all led by dedicated RVC support staff and supported by academic staff and RVC alumni.

All interventions will feature a select group of regular Student Ambassadors who will act as role models and mentors, a truly insightful experience of what studying at the RVC is like.   Annually we welcome 10 dedicated scholars to form a supportive peer group and commit to 9 events in year 1 of the programme, and 8 events in year 2, all of which will take place on Saturdays at either our Camden or Hawkshead Campus.  

Furthermore, scholars who graduate from the scheme who subsequently join full time undergraduate study at the RVC will be awarded £3,000 for a maximum of 4 years.

The proposed dates (subject to change) for the start of the 2026 timetable are as follows: 15th January (online), 24th January, 14th February, 14th March, 4th & 5th April, 9th May, 13th June, 11th July.  Completion of the Scholars programme is only met by attending at least 14 of the total 17 sessions offered throughout the 18 month programme.

The event will take place on Monday 24 November at Drapers’ Hall, London running from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, with a buffet supper served from 5:00pm.

The evening will begin with a panel discussion featuring five professionals working across different areas of medicine. Following this, students will have the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from a wide range of healthcare roles, including:

We are delighted that our guest speaker is Dr Fiona Hill. Fiona is a leading voice on diplomacy, national security and global power shifts. She has operated at senior advisory levels to governments on both sides of the Atlantic. She is currently Chancellor of Durham University. Fiona was born in Bishop Auckland in County Durham, the daughter of a coal miner.  She earned her MA at St Andrew’s  University and her PhD at Harvard.

Her Tacitus Lecture is entitled “Peril and possibility: collapsing old order, emerging disorder or new order?”

This year we are holding two Mathematics & Computer Science Departmental Open Days; the first will take place in-person at the Maths Institute in Oxford on Saturday 25 April 2026 and then there will be an online open day on Saturday 23 May 2026.

For the in-person open day on Saturday 25 April, there are three options to choose from (please only book onto one option):

– Mathematics & Computer Science (10:00am start)

There will be talks on Mathematics, Computer Science, the joint school courses, and the application process. The talks are somewhat academic in flavour, and are aimed at students. A sandwich buffet lunch will be provided at the in-person event. There will also be an opportunity to have a tour of a college after the open day talks.

Booking is required for the in-person event and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. This event has limited capacity, so you should only book a place for an accompanying adult if the prospective student has an accessibility need. Have you ever wondered how ancient civilisations understood the world around them? Or how modern science can unlock the secrets of the past? The Faculty of Classics and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge are teaming up to offer year 12 students the chance to find out, in our special event “Science of the Past.” 

You will have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to study Classics or Archaeology as a Cambridge student. The day will include lectures from our academics, exploring the fascinating intersection of science and history. You will discover how the ancient Greeks and Romans approached scientific inquiry and how today’s archaeologists use cutting-edge technology to study ancient societies. You will visit one of Cambridge’s most interesting museum collections and get hands-on experience in our archaeological labs, participating in practical workshops that bring the past to life, as well as enjoying a guided tour and lunch at one of Cambridge’s historic colleges. 

This event is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a passion for history or science (or both!) to explore these fascinating subjects in a world-renowned academic setting. 

The Faculty of Law will be holding an Open Day for potential undergraduate applicants on 20 March 2026. This will be a chance for those considering Law at Cambridge, including current Year 12 students or potential mature applicants, to find out more about the undergraduate degree.

At the Open Day the programme includes talks on the Law course at Cambridge, the application process and sample legal material. You will have the opportunity to meet various academic staff, current Law students, representatives from Cambridge Student Services, such as the Career and Disability Services, as well as current solicitors and barristers. You will also be able to look around the Faculty, including the Squire Law Library, and explore the wider city of Cambridge.

Our Open Day is split into identical morning and afternoon sessions, which you can choose between:

• Morning Session: Registration begins at 9am and the event begins at 10am. The programme ends at 12:30pm.

• Afternoon Session: Registration begins at 1pm and the event begins at 2pm. The programme ends at 4:30pm.

Tea/coffee and light refreshments will be available between 12:30pm and 2pm for attendees of both sessions (morning and afternoon). You can purchase lunch from cafes onsite or in the centre of Cambridge (approx. 15-minute walk away).

We welcome accompanying adults (parents / guardians / teachers) to the event but, for space reasons, a maximum of one will be able to accompany the participant into talks.

The scheme has been established to support high attaining state school students from BAME backgrounds when making an application to selective universities, which may include Oxford and Cambridge. Following an online format, participants (if selected) will have the opportunity to attend online webinars / small group sessions throughout Year 12 (or equivalent) and the beginning of Year 13.

The winner and runners up will each receive a monetary prize and be invited to receive their awards at a meeting of the Worshipful Company of World Traders in the Autumn.   The deadline for submitting entries is 30 May 2026 and it is anticipated that the results will be announced on 30 June 2026.

This essay competition is open to all, even if you didn’t attend the Lecture in February. For those who would like to watch this year’s Tacitus Lecture but who were unable to attend, they can watch it on the World Traders’ website here. Alongside their many guest speakers, they hope to increase and broaden the number of speed-dater subjects to include Law, Surveying and Creative Arts, and also increase the focus on Apprenticeship Pathways and AI.

Through an exciting programme of practical learning, activities and challenges, participants will get hands-on experience supported by experts in the field and be introduced to the huge range of study and career options in Data Science and AI, including in the intelligence agencies and in defence.

• Work on solving problems with other like-minded young people with practical hands-on application of learnt skills

• Develop a space to collaborate online using tools such as GitHub

• Find out about the wide range of career paths in the sector, including in the intelligence agencies and defence

• Get support with thinking about future study and work opportunities and how to talk about the experience on a personal statement or job application.

• To be able to commute into central London each day over the course of a week (Monday- Friday)* 

• Currently be in Year 12 or equivalent 

• Have 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (one of which must be Maths at 5 or above) and currently be studying at least 1 STEM A Level**

*Please note that you should live within approximately one hour’s journey (via public transport) of your chosen location. Reasonable travel costs are provided to all successful candidates but please ensure it is practical for you to travel to your chosen location before you apply.  

**STEM A Levels include Biology, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, ICT/IT

As this programme aims to support students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in Data Science and AI, we strongly encourage applications from students who match one or more of the following criteria:

• Live in an area with a low IDACI score. An IDACI score measures the proportion of the population in an area experiencing deprivation relating to low income

• Are eligible for free school meals or have been within the past six years

• Come from a household where one, or both, parent(s) have not completed an undergraduate degree.

We particularly encourage applications from female students, though the opportunity is open to students of all genders.
