I would take away the importance of print concepts and that we cannot overlook the teaching and practicing within print concepts just because we have technology in our lives. I believe that the questions asked from our discussion facilitator expanded my thinking on how important practicing oral language skills are in and out of the classroom. I definitely want to practice and become more comfortable with teaching these types of things to help further my future students language and oral development.

1 takeaway that I would incorporate into my classroom is the book that my group talked about. We had a shared TikTok that talked about print concepts and how to teach it through a book. I think it was super engaging for students and helped them learn in a way that isn't through lecture. 1 idea that challenged my thinking is memorization/repetition vs. shared reading. The question that we focused on asked if 1 was more important than the other. I think there isn't one and that both are important. I struggled to find 1 clear answer. 1 thing that expanded my thinking was the paper activity. I really loved how it incorporated small groups, discussion, and inclusion.

I liked how we went around the class in small groups to answer different questions about literacy. It allowed us to work together and really think deeply about the questions being asked.

One thing that challenged my thinking was that we were able to draw pictures instead of writing out our thoughts. I thought this was a great way to express myself. It made me think about how I could do this in my future class. It made me realize that ideas can be shared with more than just words.

I really enjoyed how we got to get creative with how we expressed our thoughts for each literacy quote. I think talking with our peers and hearing other people's ideas was also so interesting.

Something that challenged me was assessing my partners. I find it easy to talk to students/children, but sometimes it can be hard to treat people my age like children. I will say that afterward, I felt way more comfortable giving the assessment.

I had never used these before, and I love how engaged everyone can get, regardless of abilities. I loved how you could draw, write, or really do just about anything to get your point across.

One idea that challenged my thinking from yesterday's class was learning how to assess student's on print concepts. I remember doing print concept testing when I was in grade school, but never thought much of it. It was honestly pretty difficult for me when doing this for the first time. I also took too long when assessing because I had to read directions and tried to find examples while I was assessing rather than before. It definitely made me value preparing ahead of time!

I will absolutely use the "Conversation Café" in my future classroom, regardless of age. I really think this can work in many different areas and for all ages, though the younger grades would require a different setup, maybe a whole-class or two small-groups. I can see it being a whole-class activity that could be placed on the board, classroom wall, or even in the hallway to display.

The assessment if print concepts, though not new to me, was a little challenging in the sense that it seemed awkward for how it moved through the assessing and was not as clean-cut/easy to follow like other assessments I have done. Obviously with time this would get easier and quicker, yet it would be nice to have ten or fifteen areas to check down a line, such as three boxes for checking: mastered, not mastered, approaching. Or, even just having options to circle, like "yes" or "no" or "with assistance" would be a little more helpful.

1. Something that I have never seen before is the conversation cafe. I think this was a great lesson that can be done with many different topics. I like how alll students are able to add anything they would like to. It would be great to use as a review or to see what students already know. At the end of the lesson, the poster could be hung up in the classroom to see what the classs had made. This is a great lesson, that I will use inside my classroom one day!

Learning and actually doing a print concept test was very helpful. Print concepts is something that students need to learn well. I think that the print concept test is something I would have to practice and prepare before giving to a student, because I would have to know what the test is at each point of time. This part of class expanded my thinking for print concepts.

I myself am not artistic at all but I got to see lots of wonderful drawings and words. I think kids would have a great time with this if they can focus.

I also enjoyed the print concept assessment because I know I will need these or similar assessments in the future to determine where my students need the most help. It was a little awkward to do with another adult, but I feel like we do so many things sequence that make us pretend adults or children.

If I could carry one takeaway from today into my future classroom it would be the takeaway of how to best support children's oral language in our instruction. I think that is important because oral language is a foundation for literacy, writing, and comprehension. I was also reminded of how important it is to discuss vocabulary words that children use in their everyday life so that children get the most out of vocabulary instruction. I will definitely be taking that practice into my future classroom.

One idea from today's discussion that expanded my thinking is the idea behind why we should incorporate technology into our classrooms. I haven't thought about why that's so important, but after discussing it in class I'm reminded of why using and learning about technology is so important for children. Technology prepares them for the future and enhances their learning. It also supports the different learning needs of children. I learned even more aspects of print concepts you can test for and why they are so important. For example, specific lowercase and uppercase letters.

I think it is a great way for student to work on collaboration and give them the opproutntity to express their thoughts however they want to, whether that be writing or drawing. Additionally, being able to see other peoples responses can help student to build upon those answers and have a productive conversation.

One thing from my group's discussion today that expanded my thoughts was how we discussed the correlation between young reading and how it impacts students in the future. I knew there would be correlations, but reading the actual statistics and discussing it with my group was very interesting and ver important to know. Understanding this concept as the people who will be teaching them at that age is crucial to the students development.

This really helps students best explain how they understand questions or other subjects they might be studying. This is a way for students to learn from one another by possibly understanding a subject in a different way than they have thought about before.

One thing that my group had discussed was how reading impacts children at such a young age. For instance, how can a second-grade listening comprehension predict seventh-grade reading comprehension? We found that very interesting and a critical point for teaching to benefit student development.

A few takeaways I would like to take from this class session into my future classroom are, fun ways to learn print concepts and word structure. I also would like to take our conversation about students and different levels into my future classroom.

The two "fun" ideas that I would take with me are a song that you would sing with students to teach print concepts and a dice game to learn word structure. The song went over different parts of the book, how the book is opened and read, and where you start reading on the page. The dice game used one die and you would have the students roll it to get a number and with that number they would say a word with either that number or letter sounds or syllables. They could also use the same activity to create a sentence with that number of words in it.

An idea that expanded my thinking about literacy instruction is that students can and will benefit from reviewing known topics while building knowledge with new ideas.

I really liked how it encouraged small group discussion and how there was no right or wrong answer to each question. I also thought it was great being able to see what other people had in response to the question.

2. I found that performing an assessment of print concept on my peer made me think more about preparation as a teacher. Without having read through the book to find examples prior, I felt like I was unprepared and wasted time trying to find them, if the book even had them, during the assessment. Choosing an appropriate book before doing the assessment is so important, especially when working with minimal time in the day.

One thing I would take away from the lesson today is the discussion-based learning or conversation cafe. I saw it as a positive way for students to share their thoughts and feelings on a topic or prompt anonymously. They would have the opportunity to share if they wished, but it takes the pressure of speaking out in a classroom away. This is beneficial to their learning, as it creates a safe environment for them to work.

During the discussion, one thing that stuck out was the aspect of print concepts. Relating it to my placement was key, as I have seen many students that struggle with print concepts in 5th grade. It has shown me that I need to put emphasis on this as a teacher, so that the students are able to identify words in a text.

1. One takeaway I would carry into my future classroom is how powerful collaborative activities like the Conversation Café can be. Having students answer questions together and express their thinking through both writing and drawing (different UDL strategies) made the discussion more engaging and gave everyone a voice. I want to use similar strategies in my own classroom to build community and deepen student understanding.

2. An idea that expanded my thinking was realizing how easily print concepts can be overlooked because they seem so basic to adults. Our discussion helped me see that these “small” skills, like directionality, spacing, or recognizing punctuation, are actually crucial building blocks to reading, and without them, students may struggle with decoding and comprehension later on.
