The lyrics address more of a ethos view, and the video more of a pathos.
Pathos-  "Men who made machines that want what they decide". This lyric symbolizes how people are turning free thinking individuals into people who are programmed to a system of society. An example would be any celebrity who has to keep up with a quota to please people, and if they don't, their careers, and/or lives could be in jeopardy. After that lyric Gambino says; "parents tryna tell their children please slow down". This could mean parents don't want their kids to rush children hood and become adults so fast. "You can feel it in the streets. On a day like this, that heat. I feel like summer. She feel like summer. This feel like summer. I feel like summer". These lyrics subtly talk about current day issues that happen today, such as climate change, and how many animals are going extinct because of it. Also the lack of fresh water in some parts of the world is another reference. the "summer" theme and warm temperatures are subject to the theme of the events. "You can feel it in the streets" might be reference to an increase in crime that happen in the summer. This may be due to people leaving homes more often in the summer. "Oh, I know you know that pain, i'm hoping that the world will change" meaning that these issues are so big that people have trouble grasping the idea of how this could keep growing into a much bigger problem. Gambino then says "but it just seems the same, (it is not the same)" meaning that people are not paying attention to the issues as if "its just the same" and nothing will ever change, even though eventually it will become a large issue. In verse 2, Gambino addresses more modern day issues. "Ever day gets hotter than the one before" referencing global warming and how summer days, especially in California, are getting warmer then the past. The next line says; "Running out of water, its about to go down. Go Down". This is addressing the issue of places running out of clean fresh water. Most likely to drought or just general water shortages in certain parts of the world. "Air that kill the bees that we depend on" addressing the endangerment of the bee population and how this will affect the human population because we depend on them to pollinate most of our crops. "Birds were made for singing, waking up to no sound. No Sound" addressing the decrease in species of birds. Going back to the beginning verse, "seven billion souls that move around the sun, rolling faster, faster not a chance to slow down. Slow down". The video and the song make it somewhat hard to interpret what it actually means. Donald Glover does not ever give an explanation for either. So it leads to the viewer and the listener to come up with their own interpretation of the video and song. For my interpretation, the song is talking about current modern day issues, and the video is showing how the current day music industry and other celebrities are currently doing. The video does a great job at showing tone with the warm colors that give off a "summer" feel.
