Students read and discussed the book, "Flat Stanley". Students then came up with an idea of how they become 'flattened'. They then have to find a specific place they would want their 'flat-self' to 'go'. Students must describe their trip in great detail, using the 5 senses to make the trip seem real. Then, each student will make a script about their trip where they will read onto the class podcast. The podcast will then be posted on the teachers blog for the public to view and comment on.

Strategy

The strategy Mrs. Cohen incorporated was amplifying the instruction using technology in an old and well known class project (Hale, p 32). She put a digital spin on it by allowing students to use a new tool to tell their own 'Flat Stanley' story in the form of a podcast. Students had to think about what is meant to be a listener vs a reader to make their podcast script as successful as it could be. By then posting the finished podcast online to a public blog, students were able to see the impact their piece had online and what kind of feedback they got from it.

Additional Strategy

Culminating experience is the second strategy I liked that was used in this lesson plan (Hale, p 19). Students had to dig deep into where they were 'going' as their flat self. They had to answer questions such as...
* Where did you go?
* What were your favorite things to see/do?
* What was the weather like?
* What did it feel like to arrive at your destination?
* How did it sound and smell at your destination?
* What did you see at your destination?
* What did you touch or tase at your destination?
To answer these questions, students had to go above and beyond in research to create a real-life sounding connection to their chosen destination. This was a project that is not being used to be harshly graded but instead provide an exciting and memorable experience for students to remember through out their educational careers.
