You’ve been looking at lots of different historical fiction texts. This is a deep genre. You need to build understandings about setting, big issues, and also the story and characters.

One great way to communicate new big ideas, build on them, and check in for correct understanding is to write about reading using the magical connectors of because, but, so.

Teach: 

You’ve been reading the book A Long walk to water by Linda Sue Park. I’m interested to hear what ideas you’ve been developing about this book. It’s heavy right? These two young children that we get to follow to learn about South Sudan, issues with clean water, and a little about the human spirit.

Today when you go off to read in your books, try to notice a theme, issue, or idea for that text. Do a little writing about reading and grow a sentence kernel with a connector.

This lesson also modeled Seravallo's compliment conferences to build confidence for writers and gather quick class data, and how to get going with a grapheme tool for writing.

(Prepare: Three large story pages, stapled books for students to write, alphabet charts)

Spill markers OR remember shared experience to teach ms. Erika

• Put up three pages with picture boxes and lines

• Plan the story with words first, next, finally

• Remember page 1, show how to count out the words, write the lines for the words, write the words

• Remember page 2, turn and talk to show a buddy how to count out those words, show me the fingers for the lines, write the words

• Repeat with last page.

• Ask students what they might want to write today. Send students off to write their own stories (have paper copied into small books)

During writing

• Compliment conferences (Seravallo)

• Count words, model how to use grapheme tool

After writing

• Sort writing
