Building trust will help dependent learners become independent learners who take intellectual risks beyond their zone of proximal development.

In Burro Genius, the teachers discriminated against Victor's native language. In order to gain trust it is important to appreciate a student's native language and culture.

Victor describes his substitute teacher "smiling the biggest smile of smiles thats I'd ever seen, he now glanced around the classroom, giving each of us personal acknowledgment." (25) Our brain cells promt us to mirror or mimic the behavior of others, signaling trust and rapport.

“Someone finally understood the hell I had been through since a child when I first tried to understand language.” All his life, his teachers never truly got to know him enough to see that Victor had a disability. He never gained the trust of his teachers because of this.
