Its like the text has been such a hard read, and then " as though he had been an enchanted princess in a fabulous castle" sounds so simplistic and modern ( does this make sense?)

Why do people become so bloodthirsty after entering the wilderness? The man in pink pyjamas, who had nearly fainted when he way the dead helmsman, how dances with glee at the prospect of having murdered a few natives. Prior to this, the fat man that Marlow was traveling with in part 1 was anxious that one of the natives be killed after his carriers abandoned him in the bush. And of course the event of the murder of the steamboat captain at the beginning of the book. Even Mr. Kurtz says "'Exterminate all the brutes!'" It's sickening.

Marlow throws the body of the Helmsman overboard, likely to protect it from being fought over by the cannibals onboard the ship. He laters states that he misses the Helmsman, even questioning if finding Kurtz would be worth the loss of Marlow's late friend. Why Does Marlow feel this way towards the Helmsman, especially after stating during his introduction that Marlow didn't much care for him? Just as an additional thing, Mr. Kurtz mentioned that only two people die in the book, and that both are important in some way. So why was the death of the Helmsman important to the overall story of Heart of Darkness?
