I learned so much from the orchestra I attended (even though it was in Fuzzy's taco shop in the union.) I finally got to experience what a concert like that was like! I have been to plenty of country and pop concerts but this one was definitely nothing like iv'e ever seen before. The director, Tanya Darby, did a wonderful job on conducting the "Three O'clock Lab Band." This was a very small band with just roughly about 15-25 people in it. There was, to my surprise, an acoustic guitar in the band. He did a very good job but i never knew that acoustic guitar was even an option in classical music.
The two songs the band played were called Stolen Moments (by Oliver Nelson Septet) and Brother Mister (by Christian McBride) Both pieces were fairly upbeat and both had a lot of solo performances, which greatly surprised me. This was definitely different from the canonic style of music that I have been learning for the past few weeks. In some of Beethoven's pieces there was as short little time where a flute or saxophone would play, but these solo's by the band I saw would last about 2-3 minutes each. The saxophone, which I personally liked best, did a solo along with a few of the trumpets and even the acoustic bass had a solo.
Overall the performance was awesome! The first piece played "Stolen Moments" was my favorite and it seemed like it was the crowds favorite also. I loved how the music would start soft and then grow and then have a solo act and sort of repeat the process in no apparent order. This was very different though from a Beethoven or Mozart piece. I think it's important for us to praise the canonic music but also very important for us to make our own style and stray from what was once and will always be considered the great western art music.
