As of 2017, there are approximately 1 in 68 people in the US with ASD (Anderson & Butt, 2017).

2. In 2020, the CDC reported  approximately 1 in 54 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. 

3. 31% of children with ASD have an intellectual disability with significant challenges in daily function (Autism Speaks, 2020).

4. Boys are four times as likely to have autism than girls (National Autism Association, 2020). 

5. Autism affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups.

6. Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3 (National Autism Association, 2020). 

7. Autism ranges on a spectrum from mild to severe. Each individual with autism may present differently (ASHA, 2020).

8. Autism is present throughout a persons lifetime. The cause is unknown; however, some possible causes include genetic differences, differences in brain development or exposure to harmful substances or environmental chemicals (ASHA, 2020)  

9. Individuals with Autism may have challenges with communication and social skills. They may also demonstrate repetitive or restricted interest behaviors (ASHA, 2020).
 
10. Currently there is no cure, but early intervention and treatment can provide lasting benefits (National Autism Association, 2020). 

11. Unfortunately, nearly two-thirds of children with autism between the ages of 6 and 15 have been bullied.

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) and therapies based on its principles are the most evidence based and commonly used with individuals with ASD (Autism Speaks, 2020).  

Speech therapy may focus on development of social and communication skills. May assist with AAC device.
